Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has backtracked her statement calling people RACIST for avoiding CHINESE RESTAURANTS and is now urging people to stop going to bars and restaurants amid the coronavirus outbreak and Trump ordered a national state of emegency.

She urged NYC residents especially healthy people 40 or younger to stop crowding bars, restaurants and public spaces and to eat their meals at home as they could be spreading the virus

On Tuesday, she rebuked the public for being arcist towards Asian businesses due to the virus outbreak and blasted new yorkers for refusing to support Asian shops and restaurants fearing infection leading to a plummet in their business

She said "Honestly, it sounds so silly to say, but there's a lot of restaurants that are feeling the pain of racism. People are literally not patronizing Chinese Restaurants. They're not patronizing asian restaurants because of just straight up racism around the coronavirus"

Several chinese business have had to shut down PERMANENTLY as a popular chinese restaurant, Jing Fong closed down due to 80% down in business

She blasted the US response to the virus stating more needs to be done after Trump claims they have the best healthcare system in the world while pointing out South Korea has tested 10,000 people per day while the US only has done a handful

She said the more powerful and wealthy you are, the more access you have to get access to testing while those who can't afford it are left behind

Is Alexandria right though that there's a racist sentiment against chinese people and they're avoiding their businesses?.

Its not really illogical to think that chinese people may have flown to china more recently. I work for a chinese company and therefore have a lot of Chinese people at my company and they take trips to china constantly for business and to visit family. She just wants attention again

At this point I don't see how a chinese person is more likely to have it over any other nationality. I also seriously doubt european restaurants are being affected as greatly despite europe being the new epicenter. Nothing logical about it.

More "avoiding these specific restaurants doesn't make you any safer than avoiding any others would, so don't rule them out if you have to go out to eat." No, the people doing this are perhaps too dumb to be properly racist. It's a weird guilt by association thing that doesn't take into account the actual nature of that association. I don't think there's an appreciable number of people avoiding Corona beer because it shares a name with the virus, as much as memes might lead you to believe otherwise. Doing a racist thing right now doesn't mean you're racist in everything you do, nor that you've always been a racist. This. A lot of people don't exhibit symptoms and aren't particularly affected by it, but still carry the virus and can spread it to others who will have severe reactions to it.

The reasoning is based on the lost business more so than the risk of contracting the virus. Provided everyone's exercising reasonable social distancing measures, the likelihood of transmitting the virus is pretty low, meaning you don't actually have to weigh the benefit of added business against the risk of infection. This has also been a problem since the virus first emerged three months ago, while social distancing recommendations have only really become a thing in the last couple weeks, so comparing them side by side like that isn't necessarily reasonable.
