When fight the same horsemen and slimes for the 200th time it gets a leeetle stale.

When I get the Falcon in Final Fantasy VI I always go straight to Narshe to get the Moogle Charm.

yeah it is better because you can choose to fight and grind out every encounter or just completely avoid fighting (and the time wasted by loading into the battles, running away, and the loading back into the field)

Any system where the enemies run away when I am sufficiently leveled is a good system.

If enemies are aggroing me I need to grind more.

most games with field icons like persona, trails, tales, etc. usually have enemies running away from you when you're over leveled even before you initiate combat so it's the best of both worlds

It does get a little monotonous, but that's literally the purpose of ANY RPG. If no random encounters, no plot. I mean, you did purchase the game yourself... what do you expect?

Hell, Octopath Traveler gets kinda frustrating, and yet that's the only way to complete the game; grinding and leveling up to beat the "boss"

What's a recent jrpg that has a 100% avoid mechanism? Loads of fights are unavoidable; all the sprite does is give you a heads up or an opportunity for first strike a la Persona 5.

:p

That sets your random encounter rate to 0 via mechanical toggle. The PC isn't actively avoiding/fleeing/juking the enemy.

Logical doesn't add up; you either like it or you don't, but okay.

Anyways, when you get tired of the tedious encounters, move on to another game. It helps with the monotony of JRPG. It helped me.

unavoidable =/= random

this topic is about random encounters. you can't avoid shit like bosses and mini bosses but you almost always know when they're coming up

having the ability to completely avoid trash mobs on the way and engage at your discretion is a net plus 100% of the time

@kirbymuncher
Allow me to explain.

Each plot has a problem, right? And you must overcome/defeat that problem, right?
Well, you can't overcome the problem if you are too weak. Random encounters strengthens your character(s).

I mean for mooks -- encounters where it's possible to retreat from in the first place. Scripted enemies that seek you out (Lufia 2, Persona series, Chrono Trigger/Cross) is equally as good/bad as legit random encounters (Final Fantasy).

You said you enjoy having the choice to avoid a "random" battle is all. You prefer something like DQ9 or 11?

What?? This post is pointless.

We are talking about how random encounters allow players to beat the "bosses" (non-random encounters). Yes, non-random encounters do strengthen your characters, but we were talking about the progression of the plot.

There are JRPGs without random encounters (as in enemies you can see on the overworld) that have plots too. Random encounters have nothing to do with plot.

Again, you have no point.

Read your posts, bro. My point was in reference to random encounters.
But, in your case, then, non-random encounters are also necessary for the progression of the plot for games without random encounters.
