I just don't how "Barack Obama, but with less charisma, substance, and experience" would appeal to anyone, and yet somehow he's one of the top-tier candidates. Buttigieg appeals to people who are proud to consider themselves "non-ideological." They are clearly different people/candidates, but I actually see a lot of similarities between his campaign and Carter's in 1976. Both were excoriated by the left, and hated by their fellow candidates of all stripes, for saying a bunch of pablum that was lite on policy and had no real meaning, with Carter even saying stuff like "Our campaign is about love." Both were well liked by the media, and received attention even before their presidential runs, both blew up by "kind of" winning Iowa (None of the Above technically finished ahead of Carter), and both attempted to use their religion in an unconventional way for the time to speak of a New Morality. It legitimately never crossed my mind he could mean the civil rights movement and I would reject any implication that is what he meant.
