Me and my wife started working in criminal law, but honestly by the time I met her, it was mostly helping people avoid going to jail for DUI's etc, not actually representing people in Prison. She was a public defender before I met her, and did death penalty defense for awhile, but I never was involved with any of that.

I have seen a prison while driving past in CA, but never up close, other than on TV. I have watched documentaries about them though and I absolutely hate the IDEA of prisons. I do not think you should cage animals, the concept of doing that to humans is abhorrent to me.

It is the worst kind of torture as I have (for most of my life) always needed to be doing something, to keep my mind occupied. Reading solved that problem for me primarily, but being locked up in a prison would probably drive me insane quickly.

Anyway, I'm watching the new season of better call Saul, and I don't wanna give anything away, but it made me think about what lengths people would go to, who have been to prison or know well what it's like, to avoid going back, and what lives they would consider "better", so they could remain outside.

So, anyone on here been to prison? It looks like a very sizable percentage of Americans have been at one point (which is crazy mind you). I'm mostly talking about the prison/jail system in the US mind you, but any experiences would be interesting to hear about.

I also totally understand if nobody wants to talk about it, or if it's private and not something you want to be public, just, thought it could be an interesting discussion.

My moms a cop, so Ive been to them. Ive had family members in prison. Ive also been to a prison family day thing. You basically get to spend the whole day with someone in prison. I dont really remember everything. I do know it took a lot of time to get everyone ready. We had to basically put everything in these lockers and stuff...

Nah, it's just boring when you're sober and still have to wait around to get let out by next shift or whatever. I think only once was I in a room with other people, in Canada people get put in different rooms for drunk tanks unless they're really full.

I wasn't in jail or prison, but I did get put in a mental institution for observation for 24 hours once, that was bad enough. They woulda let me go home that night but I was super tired and layed down on the floor which they thought was weird (not weird for me, I'll sleep anywhere if I'm tired lol).

The place wasn't horrid, and they actually served sausages + pancakes for breakfast etc, but it was still pretty bad for me since there was nothing at all to do. It has kept me from seeing any mental health professionals since then (many many years ago) cause I'm not chancing that happening again lol.

A drunk tank would probably be much worse, but luckily I have never consumed much alcohol (just a few times when very young, and like once after I was 21 (I think I was over 21 for that New Years party).

Honestly I wouldn't give a crap (heh...ok I would), about pooping in front of someone lol. I could easily have been a nudist, but I'm just too polite....if it was the norm though, ain't even gonna bat an eye.

yep they took us to a legit prison in 6th grade and had us meet prisoners and everything

theyre really into the whole scared straight thing there, we were just some regular middle school kids though

Only a mental ward for three months. That's basically cozy prison. The only entertainment was the other crazy people, and it was like the best reality show ever.

They wouldn't let me leave because of my depression and lack of will to live, it probably didn't help that I refused all medication and denied the fact that I was obviously depressed the whole time. On principle I was being force fed pills, so I refused, so they wouldn't let me go. For 3 months.
