I think its just because people just choose to do that. Like how people watch rick and morty and make the show deeper than it is. Like, Dracula to me is about a vampire killing people. But Im sure somebody shoehorned some metaphor.

So you believe metaphors are added after the fact. What are you complaining about then

that was mostly in reference to older movies. Horror movies today are basically outright advertised as being a metaphor

Nah, art projects are not the same as movies.
first of all: they can be

Movies need to be an entertainment experience
second: no they don't

third: movies can be entertaining while also offering things to think about

Who said it would be shit? You have your basic ass snickers bar, but you're complaining that single origin 70% cacao bars exist.

Or just wanting to eat a good snickers bar once and while without having to feel bad about ruining the environment with the wrapper, or supporting the corporations behind the snickers. A snickers by itself is great. I dont want cranberries added it to then have to think about the carbs and calories and whether the ingredients in there are real or not

Another thing to notice is, the disparity between audience and critic scores are showing whats up. These movies look are making low box office numbers, terrible to okay review scores. But the critics are eating it up.

Most good movies are about something, but horror movies especially reflect fears and anxieties deep in the audience's mind. Of course they're going to be "metaphorical" at a higher rate than, say, screwball comedies, and part of the fun is how different people can react to them.

hasn't it been that way for a long time?

like, Night of the Living Dead being an allegory for consumerism, Dracula being about puritanical fears/sex, werewolves coinciding with menstruation, etc

yes. Pretty much since the start of horror movies.

you can still find a surface level enjoyment of those movies, like, It Follows can just be about a supernatural entity following people after they had sex instead of it really being about STDs, or Hereditary can just be about some demon possession stuff rather than being about grief

First and foremost a horror movie's goal is to disturb the viewer. Not everyone needs a metaphor but that doesn't make it not good horror.
