Still feels so surreal, somewhere Id only ever seen in movies for the past 20 something years. And then going there, and its exactly like you see in the movies with steam coming out of the ground and hot dog stands and news stands round every corner and shit.

Where else can I go in the US? People on PotD and a few friends have said to avoid Miami and LA. The latter would work if Im doing a more general road trip around west coast and have LA as a small part of it?

LA isn't bad aside from the traffic. But you need a car to get around that city.

Well, Hawaii for one, then I'd probably check out the Bay Area/San Fran (not just san fran though tons of awesome stuff there).

Malibu is nice and near LA , some decent places around there and Santa Cruz is pretty good, that mostly takes care of CA.

Nothing has knocked my socks off in Oregon or Washington personally, so i'd probably skip it.

I'd also agree to skipping Florida all together unless you wanna visit disney world or something. The beaches are ok but meh over all.

Consider traveling outside the US? Mexico was awesome but have not been in 30+ years. Europe would be insane, try Dublin at least. I'd head on over to Japan if I had the money as well, not to live, but to visit would be nice.

Normally I'd say give Australia a shot even though it's a LOOOONG trip, but yeah, not right now, also avoid Europe in the summer at this point.

Not a fan of Russia or Germany either personally but many people love visiting (my wife studied in Russia for a year in fact).

If you have not been to Nevada, you could try Vegas/Reno and maybe swing by Burning man, if you can get in, and if it's not just too comercial now (I went when it first started).

Buncha other options but that is all I can think of off the top of my head.

I was thinking of Hawaii too but it just looks mad expensive. Ive done a lot of Europe and also been Mexico so trying to find other places. Australia and New Zealand I know Im gonna go to eventually but still have that US itch I still wanna scratch right now.

so Hawaii is def on the list, Oregon does look nice from what I see on tv. Any particular reason you aint a fan?

Oregon coast is nice, and romantic if you have an SO, and we LOVED the Wolf Creek Inn in the Shasta mountains, but other then that, I didn't really dig portland etc, and there were no great places we wanted to visit there (Same in WA).

Hawaii isn't expensive at all really, you can fly there pretty cheap if it's 2-3 weeks in advance, and you can get an AB&B that is right on the beach. That is our plan next September in fact. We were gonnn go with a hotel but they are like $200 a night, but a WHOLE apartment (3 beds) is $80 a night lol (split 3 ways), so yeah, way cheaper.

We are doing a cruise to get there and flying back, but you could do a week in Hawaii for $500 or so pretty easy including flight/AB&B and food.

If you were going to stay much longer I'd consider checking out renting rooms, I saw one for $800 that was right on the water as well, full month for only $800 is pretty awesome.

And yeah, I have relatives in LA (Malibu actually) and so visited etc, but jesus I hate driving around there, it's horrid AND they auto charge you for using freeways etc, and the drivers are insane and I wasn't even gonna try public trans. This was before I started actually using uber, so if I go back, I'll probably just uber everywhere at this point.

But I've never really been a fan of LA, it's VERY city...if that makes any sense, unless you go way out of your way to Malibu etc, most areas are just....full of people, too many for me. I'm not a massive fan of NY either because of that (although long island is much nicer and the food there is awesome), manhattan and brooklyn/queens etc, is again, just too city/bustly etc.

SF at least (hate driving there too), you can use bart to easily get around, and there are so many really nice places in the suburbs to go (and the food is insane).

I can stand a city for a day or two, but yeah, not gonna vacation there for a week etc.

I have never been to Denver, although I think I did drive through colorado a few times (may have been there as a kid). Is there a good reason to visit?

Never was a fan on Times square tbh, Statue of liberty was a let down as well.

There's just something in the water or something. Write it off to the air or the altitude, I dunno how to explain it.

Times Square was just exactly like the movies man. It was unreal.

Cause I went around Christmas time too everything was exactly as I had seen it on tv.

I can imagine statue of liberty being a let down. I didn't even go to the island, just sat on the right handside of the staten island ferry and had a look from there

Chicago's nice but mostly in the late spring/early summer when you can access the many parks and beaches around Lake Michigan. They also have a lot of places to visit such as museums, etc. and cultural attractions that can compete with those in New York and elsewhere. All in all, while it does have its bad areas (as if New York City, LA and company don't have those as well), Chicago is a great place to visit.

What are you looking for? Large tourist cities? Or landmarks?

You could do a road trip for seeing a bunch of US landmarks like Mt. Rushmore, Grand Canyon, Space Needle, etc.

I had my first trip to NYC in December. Hotel on Times Square across from the Hamilton theater.

I was pretty unimpressed. It felt like a giant outdoor shopping mall. But I was surprised how it was exactly like what you see in the movies. I think if I hadnt seen it in the movies so much it would have been a different experience. But I feel a lot of travel will be kinda dull for me because I know what to expect. I need to find out another way to travel or somewhere else to go maybe, more adventure type locations.
