Mentioned it in the Bioshock topic, but I'm having hell playing the thing 'cuz it crashes so often. (not just for me, the Steam forum for it is nothing but crashes)

Depends on a lot of factors. Did I lose progress? How long does it take to relaunch the game? Was the game really fun?

If I lose like 8 hours of progress, that could be a great game and the only time it crashed but I'm probably out.

This I guess. Not a big deal in Bethesda games because you can save every 30 seconds and never lose progress. Something with checkpoint saves though, different story.

First thing that came to my mind as well. I remember using the soul trap glitch to create permanent summons. It was like a 50/50 chance to crash every time I used the spell, so I would summon one, save, summon another, crash, restart, wait for the loooong load screen, and repeat until I had an army of golden saints or whatever. Crashing and glitches were like part of the game on Xbox.

Pretty much this. Not all crashes are equal. It also depends on how invested I am in the game when it crashes. Playing Xcom for the first time, for example, I had a crash after playing through the tutorial and the first mission that wiped all of my progress because autosave wasn't on by default. That killed my motivation to play it any more that session, and I still haven't gone back to it (I intend to, but it's not a high priority), despite knowing that it's a great game and I just got unlucky.

If I quit after quite a few crashes, I wouldve never racked up over 700 hours on Skyrim on my computer, or a few hundred hours on any other Elder Scrolls game.

The games I buy hardly ever crash so I tend to go right back. Like the rest of you said though, if it causes a significant loss (say it corrupts a save) then I may bag it. Really don't like to leave games unfinished but I've no need to struggle through junk when there's so much else to play.

I got through Pine despite numerous crashes and bugs, some requiring a restart. The initial load from title to world takes several minutes, but the game auto-saves pretty regularly, so I never lost much progress. It was an alright and interesting game and I had fun with it, a fair match for the asking price IMO, but you definitely need tolerance for performance and stability issues, and it's only advisable if the game's particulars appeal to you.

I guess so long as a crash doesn't rob me of much progress and I am enjoying the game, I'm unlikely to put a game down just because of some instability.

So on my old desktop for some reason both Bioshock 1 and 2 would cause my entire computer to shut down if I played them for more than like 20 minutes, but nothing else would. (GTX 560 Ti. more than capable of running both games). So I contacted 2K support and asked how to fix this and they were just like "Weird! That shouldn't be happening!" Yeah I fucking agree, it shouldn't be happening, I want to know WHY it's happening. So they were no help so I played through the entirety of those games in 15 minute blocks. I'd play 15 minutes, shut the game down. Relaunch, play another 15 minutes, repeat. Yes, I really did this. lol

I've only had Morrowind crash on Xbox one time and that was from deliberately drinking hundreds of random potions to see if it'd kill me, I don't remember having Oblivion on 360 crashing either. Skyrim on PC and Switch have crashed plenty but those crashes were fairly predicable and never really became a problem, just taking a break every few hours would pretty much stop them from happening at all. Fallout 3 and NV probably crashed some but I don't really remember. Fallout 4 for PS4 has been really crashy particularly on startup and has seemed to have gotten worse the more I played it.
All that being said, crashes don't seem to be much of a deterrent for me.

Between 4 and 30, depending on if I'd been enjoying the game, how much progress was lost, and how frequently it crashes.

Rarely does a game grab my attention anymore, so 1 crash can often be enough for me to just give up. If i'm into it though, I will try and find a way to save often etc, and deal with the crashes, it's so rare that I find a game I really like now....it's worth it.

Replaying Knights of the old republic II the sith lords (didn't realize they updated it a few years ago on steam!!). Really enjoying it.
