This is a topic to rate the contest strength of potential newcomers in the current contest environment.

I will pick the characters to rate and discuss for each day from user nominations - whoever the 3 most nominated characters are at that time. If there are more than 3 I will pick randomly. You can nominate any number of characters at any time, but you cannot nominate the same character twice.

All characters who were present in the 2018 Character Battle will NOT be eligible. Otherwise you can nominate any character that has appeared in video games; even comic book characters. This will exclude real-life athletes who have only appeared in long running sports series, however I will accept those who have their own games such as Shaq. I will accept nominations for iconic gaming duos too, if there is a compelling reason for both characters to be linked (either co-starring in a game ala Banjo & Kazooie, or always appearing together like Callie & Marie from Splatoon).

Each day will have a separate topic, and nominations will carry over. As far as actually rating the character's contest strength; I ask that users rank a characters potential strength with one of the following qualifiers - LAW Fodder, Low Fodder, Mid Fodder, High Fodder, Fodder Line, Low Midcarder, Midcarder, High Midcarder, Near Elite, Elite, LAW Tier (capable of beating Link). I will average all the ratings given to a character to come up with their final ranking. I have included a highlighted entrant from Character Battle X on each tier of the strength rankings below, to provide a baseline for each.

Note that LAW Fodder is meant to be a tier reserved for the weakest possible characters to put into a contest. A character will only be placed there if at least 3/4ths of the voters for that day agree on the LAW Fodder rating, and no ratings above Low Fodder are given. If either of those conditions are not met, the character will not be eligible for the LAW Fodder tier.

Robin Hood (Robin Hood/Age of Empires) - Low fodder

We get new Robin Hood takes every few years or so but I don't think any of them have had any impact AT ALL since Men in Tights, and even that one's reach is going to be very limited. Probably the only Robin Hood anything that a halfway-respectable portion of the user base has both experienced and cares about in the slightest is the animated Disney one from 1973 with the animal people. So yeah, I feel this basically downs to how you feel about the lead of a middling Disney animated film that people watched on VHS as children, with everything else Robin Hood combined adding only a modest amount more (of which Men in Tights, while not worth much at all, still might be worth as much as everything else combined). Is that gonna on the level with, say, Mulan - even disregarding any hype for the upcoming live action movie? I don't see it.

Metal Slime (Dragon Quest) - Low fodder

Helpful for grinding and all but potentially outweighed by the OH MY GOD STOP RUNNING AWAY factor - and even though the latter may eventually result in Stockholm Syndrome, Metal Slime grinding gets ridiculously outclassed by Metal Babble (and maybe other stuff too, depending on the game) grinding later on - but Metal Babbles don't have Slime palette swap mascot factor so they'd probably be weaker.

Kris (Pokemon Crystal) - Low fodder

Crystal is fairly weak for a third version, she got replaced in HeartGold/Soul Silver, IIRC she only exists in the game if you pick her as the lead instead of Gold, and she has no important anime counterpart. I feel like a pretty high amount of people are gonna at least recognize May and Dawn by name and character design even if they haven't really been into Pokemon since Gen 2 but Kris? Without this topic series I would have just assumed the character's name was "Crystal" and while I could have identified her by her artwork as "someone from Pokemon," it would probably take awhile for me to place where.

Agree with all. I strongly considered Mid Fodder for Kris, but Axem's right that she's too easy for GameFAQs to have missed entirely.

Agree with Low Fodder for Robin Hood. He doesn't have a single distinctive interpretation that can provide a strong match pic, and there are no popular games starring him. The biggest recent thing is him being a Persona in P5 - a late game one at that. Everyone knows him but very few will care.

Metal Slime - it still looks like the iconic Slime and I don't think many will anti-vote based on how annoying of an enemy it is. I'll say Mid Fodder, barely.

Kris I say is Mid Fodder. She is a bit obscure nowadays, but Kris is definitely remembered (by picture, not by name) for being the -first- female protagonist in a main Pokemon game. And Crystal is still a nostalgic game with a pretty high play rate on Gfaqs.
