This week, the Virginia House voted to strike Lee-Jackson Day from the list of state holidays. The holiday, observed on the Friday before Martin Luther King, Jr. Day in January, honors Robert E. Lee and Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson as "defenders of causes."
Both men owned slaves and fought to preserve slavery in the US.

No one is making excuses for him, but its not correct to call him a traitor.
He resigned his commission and took up arms for a state that seceded illegally from the US. That's pretty much the definition of treason.

Good. We should in no way honor the man that (probably) killed more United States soldiers than any other enemy general in history.

[LFAQs-redacted-quote]

He swore an oath to Constitution and to the federal government.

If you don't want to call a random Georgia farmer a traitor because he was more loyal to his state in 1861, fine. Not remotely the case for oathbreakers that took sometimes multiple oaths of loyalty as army officers, congressmen, and cabinet secretaries.

I just want to point out that Lee's quote about slavery being a "moral and political evil" is taken out of context. He turns it back around to say that it's good for black people because it leads them to Christianity, but bad for white people because it builds dependence on slavery. It's not a quote spoken in sympathy with the victims. It's more like a drug user snorting junk into his nose and saying, "Man, you don't want to get stuck on this shit."

He resigned after his state seceded. Thats not anymore treasonous than any other person whos fought for independence. After the war he was never tried for being a traitor and helped reintegrate the North and South. Its not correct to call him a traitor.

Secession is illegal. He swore an oath to defend the United States. His actions as an officer in the Confederacy were in direct violation of the law and actively worked to enforce an illegal action.

Its nice that he helped reintegrate after the fact, but that does not make him any less a traitor. Nor does it matter whether or not he was prosecuted for it.

Every fight for independence is illegal.

The Founding Fathers were traitors to the British empire. Not America.

Lee was traitor to America and was forced back to the country. So he still retain his traitor status and was involve in Treason against our nation.

Honestly, Lee is one of the biggest reasons the US was able to stay intact. He knew that if he didnt ceremoniously surrender that we'd be in a shitpot war for decades to come. Everyone would have just kept going at it, started using guerrilla tactics and such

Im not a sympathizer. You just have to frame Lee in the right historical context.

Are you serious with this? Under that definition all British history books should label Washington a traitor. And while they could do this, no one does because they recognize that fighting for your home to be able to govern itself is not historically viewed as a traitorous act.

Just to be clear, the US doesnt officially view Lee as a traitor and his US citizenship was reinstated.

He was still a traitor to their empire, in every sense of the word lol. So was Lee to America. And of course his citizenship was reinstated, that doesn't mean you can't be a traitor

That's because Lincoln's policy was "no penalty for secession because they didn't secede because you can't secede." He's just a guy who shot at USA military. That makes him a huge asshole but legally not a traitor.

Robert E. Lee called himself a traitor however. He knew it was treason. Everyone did. Legal loopholes or government granted immunity don't change what he did
