I'm fairly new to PC gaming, and the FPS genre to some extent. The thing is, I've always been a console gamer, so playing with a mouse and keyboard feels... weird.

I didn't know how to configure the controls best, so I started using only the mouse. I didn't know what the "Strafe" function was for (I do now), but I'm not still not sure which is the recommended setup yet. I've checked some FAQs, but they only give technical data. I've heard of the oh-so-famous WASD + mouse combo, so I'm starting to use it, although it still does not feel so optimal.

Any PC gamer here that can help me out with this?

@MariaTaylor When using mouse only, I assigned left click for shooting and right click to open doors. It was fine and all until I found out what strafing was; so I reassigned right click for strafing and wheel to open doors, which is kind of more awkward but I guess strafing with the wheel would be more awkward.

I've noticed I don't really use 'A' and 'D', so should I strafe with them? I already have rotation with the mouse, so...

Fun fact, for DOOM and WOLF, I never knew it had mouse control.

I (my friends AND my cousins, two separate sets of people with the games) played through the games only using arrow keys to move, shift to run and ctrl to shoot.

But for any game made past like 1995, wasd+mouse is by far the way to go.

WASD + mouse is literally perfect for fps games but yeah, you'll need some time to adjust and it'll feel a little weird regardless with progenitor games like Wolf/Doom since they originally didn't have mice in mind as the default scheme.

what are you doing with your hand? you should have three fingers hovering over WASD, one for back/forward and the other two for left and right

by the way, if you're playing Doom with a modified exe like GZDoom to make it more convenient to customize controls or to get higher-resolution, remember that jumping is not allowed in the original game, and looking up/down is also not allowed =] so disable those if you can, they're cheating!

but you're perhaps playing through Steam or something, so nevermind, this wouldn't apply =]

That's how I have them placed, but it's much easier to use the mouse to rotate than using A and D.

Some of the confusion in this thread is coming from (and correct me if I'm wrong) those games mapping A and D not to strafe, but to turn the camera. This is a super antiquated way to play, as every FPS game after assumes you have a mouse, and A and D are set to autostrafe, NOT turn the camera. See if you can change it so A and D autostrafes you left and right, respectively. This is the control scheme for 99% of FPS games ever released. W (forward), S (backwards), A (left strafe, NOT turn camera) D (right strafe obv).

Using your keyboard to control the camera does not exist anymore. It's all about movement with WASD, mouse exclusively controls camera.

i think it depends on what source port youre using whether A and D are turn or strafe by default. But definitely you should set them to strafe if theyre not already

Also I would say to skip straight to Doom and then go back to Wolfenstein later if youre still curious about it.
