The Money. While being fluent in Japanese would be mind blowing, it wouldnt be really worth. I plan on going there maybe once or twice in my life but thats it.

If anything, i would treat myself some nice French classes with a portion of that money, but not really interested in Japanese.

Yeah but that also depends on how determined you are to stick with it. Lots of people give up learning languages early on. So itd be a waste of money if you didnt stick with it.

I have a friend who works as a translator, in America, for a Japanese company. I don't know exactly how much she makes, but I know it's enough to live comfortably (I'd guess 70k/yr) and has a lot of the benefits that come with an office job. Plus, as she has flexed on me numerous times, she can watch anime without the subtitles.

I think it would be tough to make 100k more than you already would based on Japanese fluency. I mean maybe you could, but jobs using Japanese aren't just laying around for anyone to take. The good jobs would need you to have another skill that is valuable to the Japanese market.

For example if you are a capable IT professional and fluent in Japanese, you could definitely make good money.

I'm sure it pays very well, but again, you need more than just Japanese fluency. You need enough knowledge in engineering and technology to do it effectively, and you constantly need to educate yourself to keep up. That is assuming you can get a job easily--it's not a big market, so even if it's not crowded there aren't a lot of positions existing in the world compared to other fields.

Less specialized translating jobs are more plentiful but don't pay as well. Getting a good full time job with benefits is not easy, and even freelance jobs aren't as easy as it might seem. Most people have to work their way up from the bottom, churning out relatively cheap translations as a freelancer then building a reputation so they can get gradually get better paying work. In the beginning you need to take anything and put it out fast.

Language fluency can do a lot but don't think it's this doorway to easy money.

If they are already in a good place financially it could be pretty useful for buisness and personal reasons.

Or if you are bad with money to you might be able to get a job as a translator that will be better for you in the long run then a lump sum you will piss away.

I'd say fluency. You'd be at a level of competency matching or exceeding children who grow up bilingual, so you're going to be higher demand than most people who learn later in life so long as you can get the connections. With that, you should be able to profit way more than that in several years, and you'll be more valuable in the next ten to twenty years than other translators considering that it seems like Google Translate still has a long, long way for Asian to western languages.

Fair enough it would be plenty for a down payment and then some. But outright it's not going to get you a remotely good house in a remotely good area. That's a 3 bed/1 bath with a lot of work needed in a rural area where you'd have a long commute to a below average salary job, with walmart being the only shopping option, and only three bars, just one worth going to.

I'm taking the fluency. 100k is amazing but a new language would open up so much literature and poetry to me in a whole new way

I mean, you could leverage it into more than 100k, too. The fluency is more valuable but I'm lazy so that's not the reason for my choice
