Huh. Makes me wonder how much truth was behind him wanting nude cutscenes.
Also wonder how common practice it is for motion capture actors/actresses to not play the games or look into them after the matter. I get it's just a job for some, but still. I'd at least be pretty curious about it.

MGS4 is the crowning achievement of the series, as far as I'm concerned. It might not have been as revolutionary as MGS, or as well-written as MGS3, but MGS4 had all the fanservice and long-term payoff that I wanted, and more.

If you made a highlight reel of each MGS game, there are fantastic moments in all of them, but almost the entire second half of MGS4 is one long highlight.

the ocelot/snake fight is one of the best moments in the series and theres cool little moments here and thereotherwise, but beyond that it's definitely the worst story in the series. people bitch about MGSV having too little story but MGSIV goes the complete opposite route and has to try and cram every little thing that ever happened in the other games all at once to attempt to tie off loose ends. the result is a complete trainwreck that makes everything retrospectively either nonsensical or completely unsatisfying with its attempts to explain it or elaborate on it

People keep hyping up the fist fight with LO and I feel like Im crazy. That fight was lame af. The only worse boss-fight in the series was placing claymores on a dormant Metal Gear in a weird pattern you had to physically write down on a piece of paper after finding an NPC. >_>

MGS2 was a worse nonsensical mess than mgs4. Mgs4 was left cleaning up mgs2s skullfuckery of a story.
There's a reason mgs3 was a prequel. It's because even Kojima didn't want to deal with the Fallot of the trainwreck that was the second game.

Mgs4 suffers from having the best gameplay in the series, combined with the best locales, and then having the least gameplay. The middle East and South America are fantastic places. And you barely feel like you scratched the surface, and they're over.
Europe is a complete joke which could have been cool as fuck if it wasn't just a giant game of follow the mouse.
And shadow modes is wonderful, bit also cut short in favour of a Gundam fight.

Mgs4 is awesome, and it's gameplay still holds up 12 years later.
But it shot itself in the foot by having too little gameplay, and too much exposition.

It's funny cause I've always thought MGS2 had an awful storyline despite what his fanboys say, but I also think the gameplay makes it the closest thing he has to a "masterpiece". It just perfected what was started in MGS1.

Similarly, if MGS4 hadn't gone completely off the rails because of the awful story after Chapter 2, and instead focused on providing a great gameplay experience it would have been a masterpiece.

And MGS V is similar, there's a foundation there that has so much potential that just wasn't taken advantage of, but a sequel could have perfected it. That game has an awful story too, but the story didn't hold it back like with the other two for me.

Meanwhile, I think MGS1 and MGS3 have the best stories and atmosphere (at least that Kojima could produce), but the gameplay is janky and holds them back.

Yeah. It's the reason they rarely set anything after MGS2. Kojima wanted Metal Gear to be a one and done and spent the rest of his tenure at Konami trying to end it. With MGS2, he wrote a story with no cannon so it would be impossible to write a sequel. Then they made him write a sequel anyway. Hence why 4 had so many problems.

I don't know where the whole anti-MGS4 sentiments started. By far the best in the series, and given the user scores it's gotten on both Gamefaqs and Gamespot, that's not a particularly rare opinion (though I know 1 and 3 are more popular, especially now).

Everyone loves to hate the writing that was backed into a corner and the ridiculous amount of exposition.

But when you're actually playing that game, it's fucking phenomenal.
And MGO was goddamn terrific.

The "it was nano machines!" Cop out meme started immediately after it released. The game was worth the praise it got but it equally got bashed at the time also and rightfully so.

MGS4 was awesome, and a great sendoff to Solid Snake. It was what MGS5 should have been as far as game design goes. MGS does not lend itself well to the sandbox approach that PP had.

I didn't mind the number of cutscenes or how long they were because it was trying to wrap up a storyline.

Game was great. the only MGS I didnt like was Peace Walker and I think it's only because I played it on consoles and that is just the wrong way to play that game.

Sure but you also can't blame the guy for wanting to explore more ideas. Zone of the Enders and Snatcher were pretty great too. I'd have liked to see more of his oneshots tbh. Or even another ZoE.
