Owning a home is overrated. I used to have an apartment and i had tons of extra cash to go out, buy video games, etc. I bought a townhouse last year and i'm broke as hell. Constantly spending money to fix shit, tons of utility bills, etc. I should have stayed in my apartment. Much easier and much cheaper. Fuck home ownership

yep, theres better ways to make money

I just went ahead and bought a house. I pay about the same as I would have for a one bedroom in the shitty apartment complex that I lived in. The only downside is the drive to work during the winter months and rush hour.

Tbh the wealth disparity is a big deal, but there is also this myth propagated by sites like this that you have to live in SF or NY to have a decent paying job

I live in a medium sized city in the midwest, have a well-paying tech job, my fiance is a dental hygienist (a profession that is necessary anywhere theres people) and we just bought a 3-bedroom 1800 sq ft house 10 minutes away from where we both work, in an urban area with plenty to do for a fraction of the prices they were talking about in that article

For what its worth, millennials dont all just start out living in New York/San Fran, they choose to move there for jobs in the first place

they could be choosing to move to different places, but theyre not

lol kinda

I mean, more people are gonna go where more jobs are. There are less jobs in your midwestern city than LA or SF or NY. It's not rocket appliances.

at the same time, that is why we saw austin become a hub, and now nashville and to a lesser extent places like boise and salt lake city

people are choosing to move away from the big metros as companies are, but its a slow process

I mean, these smaller cities cant accommodate literally everybody, but there are jobs in those places, they pay well (relative to those locations), and what it takes for those areas to keep growing is for young people to reject the idea that you need to live in one of two specific locations

Home prices aren't too bad in Omaha, Nebraska.

My 6 bed 2.5 bath 3300sqft house cost about 260k

My friends just bought a 3 bed 2 bath 1500sqft house for 155k

Sure it's not LA or NY but it's also not the middle of fucking nowhere in Indiana or Kentucky or some other shithole state. Plenty of job opportunities and fun shit to do here.

Yup. I did the same long commute for my first job out of college and my first few years. Shit sucked but I built an awesome resume.

Right now, my 47 year old husband has decided to go back to school to finish his associates degree. He wants to transition from a systems engineer to a site reliability engineer so hes learning to code. I hardly see him anymore and Im not happy about it. But I know hes doing it to better himself and provide more for us, so I just need to suck it up for a year and a half or so.

I bought a 1600 sqft home I found using Zillow for $225k. I don't like window shopping for homes.

Smashingpmkns posted...

Not really. It just depends on the quality of the agency listing the home. Oftentimes the agent just wants to get the home listed on the MLS asap and worry about the important details later. Of all the listing sites I've used, Zillow is by far the most functional.

Most of it sucks. Omaha's pretty great though. Lincoln is cool if you ignore the Husker boners

Same for Iowa - you guys at least have Des Moines and Adventureland

Never really got into the fantasy of owning a home but I bought one just for the practical decision that rents keep skyrocketing in my city (Phoenix) and its better to control that cost by buying than be at the whims of the market

I do think working 5 years as a cable tech working in homes really helped give me some grounding on what a decent home/neighborhood looks like vs garbage ones. Seen everything from shacks to mansions and Im happy with my low maintenance townhouse (3br, 2.5 ba, 1500 sq ft and paid 190k for it)

Zillow though is a pretty solid site. I used it a lot when I was shopping and I still hop in every few months to see how much homes in my neighborhood are selling for (gotta make sure Im not heading underwater )

Yeah, who wants more property, less company, a ton of space between you and your neighbors?

Yeah, but then I have to hop in the car if I want to actually go anywhere. I can roll out of bed, get food from several different international and regional cultures, then play board games with old people or go to a PC cafe for LAN parties or fuckin' karaoke. All within 5 minutes of putting my shoes on.

as I just said everyone isnt just born in SF/NY. These are cities that people are already leaving their lives behind to move to

they could instead be moving to places that are more reasonable, but theyre not
