Owning a home is overrated. I used to have an apartment and i had tons of extra cash to go out, buy video games, etc. I bought a townhouse last year and i'm broke as hell. Constantly spending money to fix shit, tons of utility bills, etc. I should have stayed in my apartment. Much easier and much cheaper. Fuck home ownership

It's great if you can find a good job that lets you pay for all of that.

Unfortunately the good paying jobs tend to be in urban areas. If the land is cheap, chances are good that your only job options will be low paying part time jobs with no benefits, and you'll need to work two or three of them just to scrape by.

Home prices and rents are going up in rural areas too because of old people and LLCs buying out there. Small houses in rural Northwest Wisconsin are being bought up and rented out for $1,000+.

... I don't know where you live, but none of this is accurate in most of the US. People in urban areas often have stupid commutes made worse by traffic. If you're willing to spend an equal amount of time commuting from the country, your radius for jobs blows out 50+ miles.

This doesn't make sense, dude. What he said is still true. The jobs are in the cities. If you're in a rural area, you don't avoid the congestion from cities, you just drive an extra XX minutes before you get there

Hey here's a map of the new jobs in 2019. Green counties went up a lot, red ones went down a lot. Notice how metropolitan areas are almost all green? And the red counties are almost all in rural areas?

This is why moving to the country isn't going to be a good solution for most people.

San Francisco is just a whole other world. I remember my cousin used to live there and he bought an apartment for 1 million. This was like 12 years ago. I visited and stayed there. It was basic af, 3 bedrooms and not very nice. I dont even want to know what it would cost now.

People pay $4k a month just for rent out there. Its insane. I know I can easily find a job at any of the big tech companies out there and double my income, but it wouldnt make sense with their cost of living. I do own a home, but if I sold it and moved there I wouldnt be able to buy one ever.

Yes if anything you're likely to have to take a job that's farther away. Traveling long distances uses more gas than sitting in traffic.

I can't tell from the map exactly but this looks to be about urban areas, not rural areas.

At least the parts of my state that are shown are places where there is either a micropolitan or metroplitan statistical area

which makes sense, since rural areas never had jobs to begin with outside of certain kinds of natural resource extraction

Seriously. If you buy a house out in the sticks and commute an hour to your job in the city, it severely limits your career mobility. A house roots you to where you are. Considering that the job market practically demands job hopping every few years, a house is a terrible investment for most millenials.

I'm at $1,300 a month, and I purchased my house 3 years ago, and I'm thankful I did, because the price has gone up 20% in that time. Zillow shows it going up 30%, but I don't really believe that, as a house around the corner with similar specs shows 20%.

I can see why people have to rent.

yeah, my point is that you're also dealing with the same congestion in addition to the distance, though. Unless you get a sweet job where you can go in at off-rush hour times, which maybe you can! But for most people that's not realistic

like in the actual city or one of the suburbs?

if its in the actual city its probably not so bad

seems like a nightmare dealing with the commute there, though.

Its funny cuz I really want to live in a city. Its just more to get into. Granted I grew up in Polk county as an only child but damnit if the city life isnt appealing. I moved to an area where I could walk to everything I needed and was 20 mins outside center city. Was awesome honestly.

Now Im back to driving about 45mins either way to Tampa or Orlando. Kinda sucks man. I wouldnt mind owning a home in Philadelphia or Jersey. Taxes and all

when i first graduated college and got my first job, i was driving a good 90 minutes one way for commute
i did it and it killed my soul for 3 years, but i wouldn't be where i am today if i didn't do that then
