Season 10. But it still had plenty of good stuff after season 10...just to be clear.

I feel like in all this time, there must have been an episode where a character in the Simpsons literally jumps over a shark.

So that one.

Armin Tamzarian is often cited as at least the starting point. They still had several good episodes that came after that so perhaps not a true "shark jump" moment, but the show was never the same.

"Behind The Laughter" is another good one.

Or the Homer "prank monkey" episode where he gets raped by a panda.

Edit: Armin Tamzarian is actually pretty apt in the sense of shitting all over an established and beloved character.

Even though I don't hate 'Principal and the Pauper' as self-contained material (it had some pretty damn funny lines like 'Up yours, children!'), that would get my vote. Season 8 was still prime Simpsons IMO, even up through S9's first ep in New York City (despite the unintended post-9/11 melancholy). PatP was a pretty clear jumping-off point, after which the show gave us two blah episodes for every good one. I genuinely can't think of a single S10 episode that I enjoyed enough to rewatch it.

That happens in probably the last truly good episode of the series.

I didn't personally mind the principal and the pauper, at the end of the episode Skinner became Skinner again and you're supposed to forget that any of that ever happened.

I forget the season but I remember an episode in the season where I thought the whole season was pretty dumb.

For basically no reason they go to Africa on a safari or something.

That was the whole episode.

At one point they are like floating down a river or something.

I remember the jokes being tryhard. Like a writer writing jokes not cause they are funny but because he needs to meet a deadline.

Yeah, many cite this as the true turning point.

man, I remember episodes I like of the Simpsons all the way through the 2000's. It did clearly jump the shark at one point, but the jokes are still solid enough to land.

Like damn, people seem to fucking hate season 9 and 10 of The Simpsons, but episodes like the Mel Gibson episode are classic in their own right for how goofy and stupid they are. The dog being the mastermind of Mr. Smith Goes to Washington is a classic joke. I get that they aren't as soulful as seasons 2-5 or whatever, there's definitely a lot more heart in episodes like Bart the Lover than a lot of future episodes, but the transformation of the Simpsons still have way to hundreds of amazing, nostalgic jokes.

It might be a cultural thing though. I think the Simpsons is regarded a lot more positively as a whole in Australia than in America.
