It's interesting how it was a thing for years but only seems to have hit wider mainstream usage the past few years

I only see stans among music and gay circles. And they actually tend to differentiate stans from fans. I hardly see any kids using it enmasse.

But even then why be mad at them? English is a language that is constantly changing and adapting through the years.

https://theoutline.com/post/2425/when-stan-became-a-verb?zd=1&zi=xhha5fbd

Came from the 2000 song, was reused in a 2001 song, and was turned into a verb in 2008.

lmao you can't be serious dude. this term has been in popular use since the early 2000s

No, it fucking hasn't. Unless we're coming from two different timelines, nobody used this term until 2019.

I remember the first time I saw it was on ifunny, because on this meme it said "We Stan _______" something. I don't remember what it was. But the top comments were asking what the fuck that means. We stan? This wasn't that long ago at all, a few months.

I don't know why you're trying to act like people have been saying it since the song came out. Back in the early 2000s, we didn't say things that made no sense. Stan isn't a verb, it's a name. You can't "stan" something. This is obviously some zoomer creation.

I only ever heard it from teens/zoomers on react videos my wife watches on YouTube.

Also apparently pop denotes a song is good. Stairway to heaven is okay but Kashmir is pop.

You kids

I'm not sure if we have moved past coming up with a new synonym for cool every couple of months or if I have just gotten so old that nobody around me repeats them when they hear them but either way I gotta say it's cool/krunk/sick/bomb/boss to not have to keep up with it anymore.

Stan has been a popular slang word ever since Nas took it from Eminem and used it in Ether...back in 2001

People saying that it wasnt a thing pre 2010s are just demonstrating that they live under rocks when nobody asked for life stories. If we're using knowyourmeme as a basis, I guess that "deez nuts" also wasnt a joke until the mid 2010s even though that's been a thing since the 90s

With an e but I mostly heard my mom read the stories to me so I probably just assumed that was how it was spelled, when she was probably just pronouncing it wrong.

Stan became popular in k pop somewhat recently and it has now infected the rest of the Internet. I'd say stan as a meme is probably a couple years old, and now that the most clueless are becoming aware of it, it will probably die soon.

But it has been around for decades.

Eminem's song called "Stan" from 2000. Tells the story of an Eminem super-fan named Stan who's obsessed with the rapper as he writes fan letters to him and gets angrier and angrier when he doesn't get a response. Ends in Stan going off the deep end

https://youtu.be/gOMhN-hfMtY

dude stfu

this term has been in regular use since the early 2000s, including here on gamefaqs. used to be more of an insult, with people being called "stan" to mean dumb/irrational/lame fans.
