Developers should have unions for shit like this. They call it "a culture of hard work" when it's just abuse

It's become apparently clear that at this point there isn't a studio where the employees ARENT asked to work extra long hours towards the end of the project. This has been going on for decades and even happens at indie studios too.

The point is, vast majority of gamers dont give a shit how a video game is made and the amount of time employees dedicate to it. They just want that shit to work day 1 and dont want paid DLC at launch.

It comes with the territory.

Google hq had sofas all over the place and mini kitchens.

Why?

Because they want you to work late.

All the big software guys wanna be making games or working at a place like google. It is competitive.

When all the people with cs degrees want to work at your company, and many really want to break into the game industry, you can ask for more from them.

Hasn't this been a known thing they specifically do for awhile now?

Along with essentially just being how basically all studios run in the end.

i work as a software engineer and on some projects i worked on, we were asked to do extra hours to wrap some things up. and usually you get compensated for it.

dunno if that's the case with the devs at CD Projekt Red but either way, this isnt new territory to me...

I don't get why game dev studios seemingly intentionally do this shit to their employees. Why not just set realistic timeframes for a game to be made?
Honestly happens to project based industries all the time. I can tell you in structural engineering being at a "top tier" firm will often mean 60-80 weeks around deadlines. Of course, straight time overtime is the standard there so there's compensation I don't believe happens at game's studios. There's other things at play to, like how the first forty hours worked typically cost a company 3x as much as any straight overtime hours so budget is saved by overworking employees.

In the end great project managers are hard to come by.

Sadly a lot of the more beloved developers are utter garbage to work for and run by shitty people. They just keep the shitiness internal and away from the games themselves.

It's about making money, not making games happy. Take a couple more years and that's years of costs and no income from the project.

that's some clickbaity twitter shit.

from the actual article:

"We try to limit crunch as much as possible, but it is the final stage."

During a Q&A session, CD Projekt Red was asked if the development team would need to "crunch" to finish Cyberpunk 2077. Adam Kicinski, who is CD Projekt Red's joint CEO, confirmed that he expects the team to need to work long hours to finish the game, though he said there is a plan in place to attempt to lessen the periods of crunch.

"To some degree, yes--to be honest," Kicinski said. "We try to limit crunch as much as possible, but it is the final stage. We try to be reasonable in this regard, but yes. Unfortunately."

Game developers absolutely do need a union. As someone who participates and shapes arguments for collective bargaining agreements, I can tell you that the employers will negotiate crunch-time (overtime) into arguments regardless. The trade off would be for the developers to negotiate for. Whether it's increased pay, job security clauses, or scheduling agreements.

A "crunch" should be optional and highly incentivized. People will volunteer to work longer shifts and do not need to be forced. And if people don't volunteer, then reevaluate your release window.

small indie company pls understand

If you're a small indie company you have crunch, you just dont talk about it on Twitter because all 5 of you are going through it together. Hello Games were working 15+ hour days to get NMS ready for release, then on day 1 gamers were sending them death threats.

Seriously the gaming industry sounds like a fucking nightmare to work in. Work your ass off on a passion project for years, hardly see your family during the last 4-6 months before release, then hope to god there arent too many bugs on release and gamers like your product so that you get to keep your job and work on the next thing.

So what? Several people I follow on Twitter and I "canceled" the game last year when we found out it wasn't third person like we were led to believe. We're very disappointed.

Several people are incredibly disappointed because they were ready to play in April and the game was pushed back 6 months. That's a very long delay. Plus, it may be pushed back again considering how things are going. Won't be surprised.

Etc.

No doubt, there will be many more disappointments surrounding this game considering how massively overhyped it's been for years. It won't live up to the hype.

Gee, you'd think producing a huge, highly detailed, immersive world with lots of story, customization, and other features was a lot of work.

Not defending crunch, but to those that don't like it, maybe quit bitching about companies instead of us that seem to demand every game we play be bigger, better, and endlessly polished because that's what makes a lot of the extra work exist.

Show me someone with work burnout, and I'll show you someone that was just tyring to make their customers, co-workers, or employees happy by giving them what they want.

Crunch happens because companies commit to unrealistic release dates so they can sell pre-orders tbh
