TBH I don't really like Legend of Zelda as a franchise, but I respect it for what it is. So I actually do feel kinda bad for Zelda fans who like Smash, considering it's this huge, massively popular, series. Basically anytime a game releases, it's a monumental occasion. It's just a nice, classy series with that great fantasy/medieval pedigree to it.

Then Fire Emblem, almost ceasing to exist 10 years ago, rises from the ashes by catering to the turbo-weeb crowd, turning itself into a borderline dating-sim with combat thrown on top. It transitions from a cool, niche strategy RPG to R34 fodder that includes mini-games where you have to touch girls with your stylus, and people lose their shit lol.

So then when it comes to Smash, Fire Emblem gets a steady stream of representation from every single new game that releases, while Legend of Zelda... well, it gets Link, 2 clones of Link, Zelda, Zelda's old moveset turned into a character, and a Captain Falcon clone. Sakurai must secretly hate the franchise lol. Like I said, I'm not even a fan of Zelda, but he's really done them dirty over the past 3 games lol.

Smash is what saved FE those 10 years ago.

So it makes sense to keep popping out FE chars to keep the series growing.

Yeah ya know what, that actually makes a lot of sense. If the champions get any coverage via flashbacks or something, they'd make for a strong case. But with how little love LoZ gets in general in Smash, I wouldn't be surprised at all if DLC Pack 2 comes and goes and Zelda gets nothing again lol.

That's true, but for such a popular series, I don't think it's asking too left-field to include a side character or one-off character.

I think it's only gonna happen if it's someone who will be unique enough to add something to the roster. They're not gonna be added for the sake of it.

Splatoon is super popular but I doubt that will ever get more than one character due to how that game is unless a sequel does something drastically different.

Well ya gotta leave some room for nuance here because on the other extreme there are characters like Dark Samus.

But I think you're right that barring those extreme exceptions, they try to find characters they can do something a little different with gameplay-wise.

Actually, one reason my fan rosters always have Black Shadow over some other F-Zero characters I'd otherwise prefer is so he can take over Ganondorf's movelist and stats and stuff and free up dorf for a movelist based on energy shots, reflects and slow sword hits.

I mean, every game in the series is already represented. Generally by two characters. Another character that isn't Mildly Different Link Character Model might be nice and all, but I don't think it's inherently a better choice than representing games that don't have anything. You can easily be a Fire Emblem fan without having a character from one of your favourite Fire Emblem games, or even much in the way of spirits or music (prior to the Byleth reveal this was me in fact, with two of my three favourite games in the series still having I believe two spirits and two songs, all from the same game, included)

The newer games are probably right up your alley, then. I'm bad at FE, but Awakening's introduction of Casual mode allowed me to enjoy it.

Link is in. Zelda isn't a combatant in breath of the wild so she wouldn't be. 4 legendary heroes are too many to put in. Ganon is too big to go in.

So who else would even be considered?

Honestly if Zelda fights in the sequel I'm expecting her to join the fight.

I know this doesn't really hold ground for argument anymore, but traditionally, Smash employs the most traditional and iconic characters to represent their respective series as a whole. Link, Zelda, and Ganondorf are pretty much it for the LoZ franchise. They're the most recurring characters and best represent the series. Most other "major" Zelda characters are one-shot players, with maybe a second appearance or mention, if they're lucky.

Based on that rule, the most deserving candidate of a spot in Smash would be Vaati. Or perhaps Impa with Sheik's moveset.

Yeah. The minish cap and the two four swords games. With his powers, he probably could have a nice moveset.

I love the fire emblem series myself, but even I had to kind of double back at that byleth news. Sakurai got that crazy fire emblem bias, lol. (I was one of the people who really wanted someone like lyn or hector to get in back in the day. Crazy how even chrom got in as a playable nowadays. Feels like lyn would actually have a shot of getting in if her game was released nowadays).

With this current fighters pass, I was hoping for ryu hayabusa to get in, since he would have been a nice rep from tecmo, a company that has been around since the NES days and has been putting out good 3rd party games right alongside the other oldschool 3rd party guys like capcom, konami, SNK, enix, squaresoft, and namco. Hopefully either him or dante would be the first character for that next fighter pass they plan on doing. Also you gotta' admit, the NES ninja gaiden games would bring some amazing ost remixes if hayabusa makes it in. (An unbreakable determination, first stage from ninja gaiden 2, and the 4-1 level music from ninja gaiden 3 would be the tits).

*Although if sakurai is feeling especially cheeky, he could always add edelgarde to really watch the gaming world burn, lmao*.

I don't think Zelda is gonna get a new fighter unless there's a new character that's comparable to Rosalina. Probably something like Sheikh.

The latest Zelda game is going to be referenced with the new Link regardless. Which usually doesn't need anything drastic.

Fire Emblem is as old as Zelda. Just because they never localized the early games doesn't mean it's not a massive franchise with a lot of nostalgia for many players

Regardless, trying to compare the popularity between the two isn't even fucking close to a contest lol. And again, I'm not saying this from a fan's perspective, I just respect the franchise for what it is.

True to a point. But Zelda does have a good amount of characters appearing in more than one game. Though, not all of them are exactly fighters. Though, that doesn't matter much. I mean, Hyrule Warriors chowed up that they can pretty much give anyone a moveset. And there are many characters who appear in multiple games. Whether though ancestors who look just like them, or a character who looks, acts, and is named the same thing. Or just the ones who appear in games close enough to each other that the characters are still alive...

And I can't saw for sure, but some of the Fire Emblem characters were only in one game, correct. Or maybe 2. Even being a main character for that game doesn't mean much, as sometimes Zelda has a random character acting as another lead for a specific game with Link.
