They're never not going to pick the main character of a game/series they represent. Not sure why people ever bother talking about it otherwise. The one time they slightly deviated from this by picking Robin instead of Chrom (and Robin is as much of a main character as he is), people complained so much Chrom got in anyway.

Anyway, my more serious non-schadenfreude take is: totally reasonable to be disappointed in Byleth (I'm not really jumping up and down for joy myself) but considering we're getting 6 more characters, some of the reactions I've seen are super over the top

Pass 1 we already got fucking Banjo in Smash xo I'm okay with taking along a predictable boring Byleth (although it does help that I actually *do* like Byleth, even if I'd prefer difference Smash picks)

Yeah, exactly. It's always fair to be disappointed, but Sakurai keeping on putting more characters into this game should tell you that you're not going be very happy every time and of course Nintendo's own big games will be represented.

5th Reveal is definitely a kicker as one of the worst spots to do it, anywhere else should be fine. The 6th character is gonna be pretty important to hype up a new pack especially after Byleth.

I hope to god they don't leave New Pokemon for the 11th announcement

I'd think this was the same response really, unless it was shown along with a more requested character later in the same presentation.

I also think their additional effort to keep this hidden made it explode more. No leakers had warned the fanbase of this prehand as usually happens.

And I think no matter who joins, the Smash fanbase is capable of being pissed to some degree.

Pretty much, there was quite a bit of hate (not as much as here) for when Hero and Banjo were revealed so you are never going to please everyone.

Except Pokemon! It took until Brawl to get a main character from that, and there hasn't been another since.

Dragon Quest hasn't lit up the place outside of Japan, but non-entity is going a bit far. DQ9 and DQ8 sold pretty well and there's been tons of DQ games on Nintendo systems. And it doesn't take much more than a cursory knowledge of video games in general to know about Dragon Quest's existence. Considering the random obscure characters that people (including me) hype up, the reaction to Hero was embarassing.

Pikachu was considered the mascot by the time Smash 64 rolled around, and the Pokemon series has always been about the Pokemon and not the humans. He's not the main character of RBY, but Pikachu is definitely the main character of Pokemon as a whole.

I didn't necessarily expect not-Byleth but it was also understood in my mind that Byleth was the boring generic option.

I also expected the Three Houses character to be Fighter Pass 2 slot 1.

They were picked for being popular side characters or because they lend themselves to interesting movesets. It wasn't unreasonable to think they'd do the same with FE! There's a definite difference, though. FE main characters are battle ready and don't need anything else to accompany them. You can't use the Pokemon main characters without giving them all atleast one Pokemon. If you choose only one, why not just cut out the middleman and make it the Pokemon itself? And if you use multiple, is it going to be the starters every time?

It's not really a fair comparison.

I think despite what we see from the hardcore fan base, picking the main character of a FE game is probably the best approach, which I don't think is the case with Pokmon. No one, casual or not, would wanter want the player character in over a Pokmon. Helps that you can't really create movesets for the trainers, so the trainer was just three Pokmon instead.

I have no idea about popularity of TH characters, but they had probably decided on Byleth before the release, so popularity couldn't be taken into account.

It's not really a fair comparison.

I think I covered this under Pokemon making for more interesting movesets -- but for whatever it's worth I don't think those two options are the only ones available. For example, you could have a trainer fight kind of like Yugi in the Shounen Jump DS fighting games, such that Pokemon come out for a moment for moves but aren't directly playable:
