It's not really a fair comparison.

I think I covered this under Pokemon making for more interesting movesets -- but for whatever it's worth I don't think those two options are the only ones available. For example, you could have a trainer fight kind of like Yugi in the Shounen Jump DS fighting games, such that Pokemon come out for a moment for moves but aren't directly playable:

I didn't play 3H, but I wanted to ask, why not Edelgard? she has a 3000 times better design than either Byleths, she is far more popular (read her name mentioned far more than any other) and from what I read she is well written
She is also making it to the final in this board "best new character" contest

Is just just because Byleth has the "male and female forms" thing?

The Edelgard alt is really good anyway

plus we get really good alts for the other Lords. best of both worlds.

The Edelgard & Dimitri alts in particularly are pretty perfect

Edelgard is a cool character because basically we all agree hitler is bad and then three houses comes out and is like "Yo but what if we took hitler actions and put them on a cute anime waifu" and more than zero people are like "yeah thats justifiable then."

With Smash 6 characters are going to be cut and no doubt some of Fire Emblem will be getting the axe (sword?). Marth, Ike and the future new Fire Emblem main are locks while the other six characters have their pros and cons including other factors such as roster size will determine how many of them will return.

We will then witness a lot of whining regardless on who is cut.

3H was fantastic, Byleth looks cool to play, and we get Chasing Daybreak out of it. I'm good with this.

Depending on how severe the cuts are, loads of popular characters are getting cut no matter what. 3DS era is what saved the franchise, I just can't imagine it would be shunned.

They honestly may as well stop after this one anyway. They've already pretty much confirmed the roster won't be like this again so why bother with another game? Sure they can add newer character but what's the point when they're gonna gut most of the cast from Ultimate.

It's really hard for any Smash 6 to provide anything enough to replace Ultimate, it'll even be hard to get hype for it with all the expected loss

I doubt it will be cut so badly that there will only be three Fire Emblem characters, but Ike is very safe. He's too big of a fan favourite.

Roy is the least likely to return while one or both of Corrin/Byleth will not return. Awakening will probably have one, two if they decide to throw in an easy to make Lucina. In the end I see the series still retaining 5-6 characters.

So it's not going to be as important that the next game isn't going to "top" this one. It's going to be in a whole new category.

Yeah he mentioned the roster having to be really small or something because of it. My reaction was i'd rather they completely skip a console if this were the case just to get a decent roster with more time.

not that it wasn't always an incredibly dumb complaint but not that I was always perfectly fine with a Smash 4 Deluxe back then too! (with the already announced directional air dodges of love <3)

A Playstation All-Star could in theory match this, but having Sony to organize all the third party characters would be impossible. The only other option would be Disney if they ever wanted to go all in for Kingdom Hearts 4, but that would be more multi-media than gaming.

PASBR developers had to struggle a lot to even get first party characters. IIRC they said in an interview that getting access to first party characters wasn't necessarily easier than getting permission to use a third party characters.
