Current Events > One Punch Man S2 basically turned into the very shows it's supposed to parody.

Really a shame cuz S1 was one of my favorite things on television in the last 5 years or so.

Season 2 though, I don't get it. Why take the spotlight off of Saitama? Without him, the show turns into a soulless version of MHA. Trying to drum up all this drama and action with the Hero Society or whatever, it just makes it feel like every other generic hero anime that it started off as a parody of...

I'm hoping at least with the cliffhanger-y ending, it means the show is pretty guaranteed for a S3, but man what a letdown.

Garou and Metal Bat were really the only standouts this season. I love everything with Saitama and I like Genos but yeah it was lacking pretty hard this season.

Yeah, it stopped being a parody after the first season but in its defense, the gag was getting old so they had to take the story in another direction. That's my opinion, at least. It's still good though, for what it is.

The gag is still going on.

They are just setting up Garou to get stronger only to be one punched into Oblivion.

Eh, personally the gag is what makes the show enjoyable for me. Like, if not necessarily the one-punch part, but just the Saitama being completely apathetic to everything part.

Like honestly, the scenes that focused on King and Saitama were the best parts of this season lol.

Yeah that's my point. Those are like 3 or 4 scenes out of 12 episodes that mostly focused on other characters.

And it doesn't get better in season 3, assuming they keep following the manga. If anything it's even more dull, with even less focus on Saitama.

Fuck man, for real? That's such a downer. I had hope that maybe they took so much time setting stuff up in season 2 that inevitable season 3 will be back to focusing on Saitama.

Dammit :(

Seems like the type of thing where continuing beyond like one season or arc as either a parody or a 'proper' story seems unnecessary

Yeah it's starting to feel like that. I might just look at season 1 as a perfect standalone thing and not bother with any more content that comes out.

The animation was so stand out good in season 1 and the gimmick was fresh.

And then they ruined the animation and continued the same gimmick for a whole season again. It just felt stale.

Yup. Fight after fight showing off the S ranks. I mean, Saitama obviously plays a role as well, but I don't think I could care less about Flashy Flash and Child Emperor's fights if I tried.

Season 1 had quite a few "serious" fights in it, too. The pacing was a little faster, so you might not notice it as much, but the entire premise has always been that everybody in the show except Saitama is a 'serious' anime character.

Saitama is the joke.

But that's the problem, they didn't. Saitama spent half the season in a martial arts tournament that I don't even remember being fully explained. Like I said earlier, the parts with him and King were actually really fun, and I enjoyed the parts where he casually knocked out Garou, but besides that, he was off-screen most of the time.

Actually for that matter, King is fucking great. Give me more of him next season. Manga readers, do we at least get more of him?

Just a tiny bit from what I remember. From the end of the anime to where we're at in the manga now (or at least a couple of issues ago, haven't read it in a couple months), it's almost all about the attack on the monster HQ, with focus on most of the S rank's fights.
I might've completely forgotten something, because honestly it wasn't super entertaining.

The funny thing is Garou and his story line are a million times better than Saitama just punching a monster into oblivion.

In terms of narrative S2 blows S1 out of the water. Artistically it suffers a bunch.

Really? I thought Garou was a decent enough villain up until they give him the most generic backstory possible. Now I couldn't care less about him.

I like MHA but idk if I agree with this. Even without Saitama at all I think OPM would still be more entertaining. It's still over the top, funny and even still a parody. Garou is surprisingly likable as well.

I think the writer could actually lose the gags all together and still make an entertaining shonen as long as it keeps the same artist. The art and fights are all really great. I thought Garou vs the hero clowns was a blast, then him and Genos was even cooler, then him vs Silver Fang and other old guy was even better than that.

I get it is supposed to be a parody/gag manga but the most entertaining parts of the series to me personally are when Saitama isn't even on panel/screen at all.

Yes and he gets absolutely amazing scenes but youll have to suffer through some pointless S rank glorifying to get it. That said, the reactions when some of the S ranks actually do eventually meet Saitama is great after the build-up.
