The Democratic Party is about 40% people of color, but its top tier presidential candidates are 100% white. A diverse party needs diverse representation. The best way to ensure that for the future is for the eventual 2020 Democratic presidential candidate to choose a person of color for his or her vice president. Although it may not seem crucial, the VP slot can have a huge effect on the fate and the future of the party. Democrats should start using it specifically to elevate nonwhite politicians and party leaders.

It's not the left. This is being used against Bernie Sanders even though he's Jewish. This selective fight for diversity is yet another tool by the establishment to attack candidates they don't like and promote those they do so they can get the policy they want. Plus it's shit to write articles about and generate "content" in general.

There are plenty of Democrats who will only vote for a woman, a person of color, or both. The only white male candidate who has a chance of winning is Trump.

I don't agree with voting race or sex over the issues, but the Democrats need to find a candidate who can win. And, sadly, a white guy is going to be viewed by many as a continuation of white male hegemony. It shouldn't be that way, but I understand that people want a new president. It'd be like if every movie (save one) had a white male lead. They want someone who represents them.

I don't think even a VP is enough. Many on the left want a person of color as the candidate. Full stop.

Polls of the Democratic primary don't suggest this is a particularly large subset of the party.

Now, having said that, I believe there is value in having a diverse ticket, even if just for calculated electoral reasons.

Balanced tickets have been a thing for almost as long as we've had elections, albeit usually in terms of only geographic balancing, so a push to a more diverse ticket is hardly surprising.

And while I'm rooting for Biden, who is rumored to be extremely interested in Abrams from Georgia as his Veep, I agree that this does seem like a blatant attempt to remove the minority credentials of Sanders. But it's just an opinion piece.
