Do they really care about TOOKERRJOBZ or is it just latent insecurity because they're embarrassed over not knowing how to operate touch screens?

I'm 30 and I hate self checkout.

They're not paying me to scan my own groceries. The better option would be to give me a scanner as I go through the store and then just pay the price at the end.

As it is, they're expecting me to pay them to do extra work for them. The fuck is that?

Yea I hate when self-checkout is the only line open and the lady with a cart filled to the brim is in line in the self-checkout.

Then there is like 15 lanes that could be open but are not.

Great job manager.

Do you have handscanners in the US? Here in Sweden most bigger grocery stores this is how self-checkout works.

Get in the store, swipe the card at the scanners, pick up the scanner.
Go around the store and pick your stuff, scan each of them.
Go to the check out, dock the scanner.
Go to the check out terminal, pay the stuff.
Go out of the store.

Some do. The main one I go to has some self-checkout as well as the hand-scanners. Has some of the regular checkout lanes too.

It's a mix of embarrassment over the inability or use them, plus a feeling a superiority over lowly cashiers. Do people who say shit like "they aren't paying my to scan my own stuff" also complain about shopping carts removing the task that used to be performed by staff? People also complained about those when they were introduced in the 1930s.

I work retail and use the self checkouts 100% of the time. They are always quicker.

I guess I'm that minority who loves self check out. Not a long wait, get to scan stuff while listening to music and without awkward talk or awkward silence with the cashier. No rush to hurry and get things in my cart as well as trying to pay for it while other people are waiting behind me.

Self check out is the shit.

That's a really strange take.
Why would we complain about a change that had already happened before we were born?

Nah I think you are in the majority, it's just that there's an incredibly vocal minority of feeble, angry people who are incapable of lifting groceries into their bags.

Because it's the same argument: being "forced" to do work that employees used to do.

After a decade or so people will have the exact same mentality toward self checkout that we all do for shopping carts.

I've seen comedians and people posting memes about it. "Guess I should get a W2 for working in a grocery store since I am in self check out". I mean, not only is self check out an optional thing, its the best thing that's ever happened to me. I feel so free from social interaction. Not once do I have to worry about taking my headphones off except when I get to the exit to make sure the store siren doesn't go off if I miss anything...which happened. Once. Boy did I look stupid walking out without a care in the world.

Had a desk I was going to put together under the cart...and I forgot to scan..

I am capable. I worked at my family's convenince store during breaks in graduate school. I have bagged goods hundreds of time. Checked out hundreds of people. As far as I feel, that is work peolle get payed to do. I hate doing it for free.

It was also a step back when bagging people went away too.

I for one love to scan and bag my own shit because it's quicker and there's no human interaction. Unless I have to show my ID for beer of course.

i hate them when i have a decent amount of stuff. i don't want to scan and bag my own stuff. if i'm doing that then they should give you like 10% at least. if i'm just grabbing a couple things then i'll them. i hate when i have a cart full of groceries and they don't have a single line open.

i used to work at a store and they would only ever have like 2 lanes open during the day and at nights would just have the 1 that has cigs open. they would never hire anyone either and would only have like 3 people on the floor for the whole department store.

Love self check out and always use it. Fast food is starting to get them and they are ALWAYS empty. Out of the 20 or so times I've used one, I saw 1 other person use it. People walk straight to the register and wait for someone to come take their order. They're often not paying attention to the front because they expect you to use the kiosk, so the people are bending their heads around corners trying to get attention. Just use the screen, it's so much better.

The store wont let the manager have that many workers. Its corporate trying to pay as few people as possible. The managers wish they had more workers.

The fast food ones are far superior to grocery ones because all you're doing is selecting what you want and paying. An actual human is giving you the goods. You're not scanning the goods yourself like in a grocery store. Which is very tedious when I'm buying a lot.

With kiosks, you have four registers, each with one employee, and six self-check kiosks run by one additional employee. Without kiosks, you would have five registers with one employee each.

I understand the concern, but hiring more people was never a thing that was going to happen. Without self-checkout, they'd let you wait in longer lines because big corporations hire the minimum number of people to keep things running.

I love self checkout. I go up there with like 2 carts full, grab the hand scanner and zip zoom through everything. I usually outpace the old geezer couple beside me trying to buy their 3 items by about 5 minutes.
