A South Carolina man and and his daughter died after being shot while hunting deer on New Year's Day, a relative of the victims told CNN affiliate WCBD.

Kim Drawdy, 30, and his 9-year-old daughter, Lauren, were hunting Wednesday near their home in Walterboro, South Carolina, according to Benny Drawdy, Kim's brother.

The two were shot by hunters after being mistaken for deer, according to the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR). The agency said a group of four hunters was driving deer, which is when a group walks toward the animals to move them, but it did not give further details on how two of the hunters were shot.
"When I got the message, I just couldn't believe it," Drawdy told WCBD. "My heart stopped when they told me it was my brother and his daughter."

Emergency crews responded and found the victims about half a mile into the woods, Colleton County Fire Chief Barry McRoy told CNN. The Colleton County Coroner has not yet released the cause and manner of death, according McRoy.

The SCDNR is investigating the shooting.

Shady as fuck, considering people do not look anything like deer when it comes to their form and they don't walk / run on all fours. You're supposed to look and ascertain what your target is before you establish the location of the kill shot and pull the trigger.

Bet the shooter(s) were idiotic and shot one to just to try and sate their bloodlust and have a "cool" murder story to tell their other fellow sadists and decided to finish off the other one so if they were caught the police could only hear their story and not those of the victims.

This is why you can't even trust your own fellow huntmen. Any stupid, deranged fuck can do irreparable damage to the lives of others with a firearm.

It doesn't say whether they were wearing orange or not, but I'm thinking, even if somebody wants to kill you, they might hesitate when they realize it will be harder to believe it was an accident.

i know that not every hobby can be understood by everyone, but the one hobby i never understood was hunting...ok killing for food is one thing, but killing for fun, even if you eat the deer is just weird to me. you didn't shoot the deer because you're starving and needed to...you did it because it was "fun" to you. that's just weird to me.

I mean its literally illegal to hunt without wearing enough neon orange. If someone accidentally shoots you and you're not wearing Hunter Orange, they can easily get off the hook for the death.

I dont hunt. But I know people that do. Deer is delicious. Maybe save some outrage for the cows, chickens and pigs that are killed for their meat at an exponentially higher rate than deer?

Also its a shame this accident happened and should definitely be investigated. Especially if alcohol or any other drugs was involved. Hunting should be done sober. And the punishment for being intoxicated and hunting should be the same as drunk driving.

I guess its done for the thrill of the hunt or the adrenaline rush when food isnt factored into it. Personally, I dont see how anyone can get enjoyment out of that. Its a wild animal. Shooting a deer with a gun when all its going to do is run away is hardly exciting to me at least. If the hunted were willing to fight back and it became a battle of wits, it would be far more interesting but thats in the realm of fantasy. Only one living being could truly give you a challenge during a hunt but it would be illegal and pretty sadistic/insane to do.

As an avid hunter I've never understood how this happens (I know people are idiots). Making sure you know exactly what you're shooting is literally one of the first things you learn.

Ignoring that, most hunters make sure they have a very clean shot before taking it. Even if you're running deer it makes no sense to just shoot wildly where there's noise

One person, MAYBE. But mistaking two for deer? Come on...

4 people were driving deer, basically they walk towards them in one direction to make them run towards other hunters that are ready to shoot them. Most likely those waiting hunters saw movement, thought that it had to be deer and fired before confirming that it was animals.
The father and daughter probably were looking for deers to make them run towards the hunters, got too close to the hunters, probably made some bushes/trees move and the hunters decided that it had to be deers and simply fired towards the movements. Perhaps the hunters were drunk, perhaps they were at the wrong place, we dont know.

Hunting deer is a necessity, and is regulated accordingly. They live in areas where we drove off most of their predators years ago. If hunting became illegal tomorrow deer populations would still need to be culled so you'd just have game wardens killing them off instead.

That said, yes trophy hunters are asswipes. I've never killed anything I didnt eat. And if hunting doesnt appeal to you it's not something you have to do....
