Because the British empire was the center of the world at one point and therefore any body of water was essentially surrounded by it, and therefore it becomes a pond.

And because it's last name is Pond, Atlantic Pond (cue the dancing girls).

We call it "the sea". I don't use the term "across the pond" much. Probably because I'm not from London like most American TV shows portray British folk to be.

I remember somebody telling me about 7 or 8 years ago that the term "across the pond" was racist. Not sure what was up with that guy.

I'm British. I love in a Portugal. I've never called it 'the pond'.
