Because the British empire was the center of the world at one point and therefore any body of water was essentially surrounded by it, and therefore it becomes a pond.

And because it's last name is Pond, Atlantic Pond (cue the dancing girls).

We call it "the sea". I don't use the term "across the pond" much. Probably because I'm not from London like most American TV shows portray British folk to be.

Probably because "the pond" is a well-known landmark in your small town.

Then would we not use the term more?

Sweeney Todd: There's a hole in the world, like a great black pit. And the vermin of the world inhabit it. And it's morals aren't worth what a pig could spit. And it goes by the name of London. On top of the hole sits the privileged few, making mock of the vermin in the lower zoo. Turning beauty into filth and greed. I too, have sailed the world and seen it's wonders. For the cruelty of men is as wondrous as Peru. But there's no place like London.

Brilliant lmao.

It's about what I'd expect from the chavs of London so not really.

I remember somebody telling me about 7 or 8 years ago that the term "across the pond" was racist. Not sure what was up with that guy.
