This is a topic to rate the contest strength of potential newcomers in the current contest environment.

I will pick the characters to rate and discuss for each day from user nominations - whoever the 3 most nominated characters are at that time. If there are more than 3 I will pick randomly. You can nominate any number of characters at any time, but you cannot nominate the same character twice.

All characters who were present in the 2018 Character Battle will NOT be eligible. Otherwise you can nominate any character that has appeared in video games; even comic book characters. This will exclude real-life athletes who have only appeared in long running sports series, however I will accept those who have their own games such as Shaq. I will accept nominations for iconic gaming duos too, if there is a compelling reason for both characters to be linked (either co-starring in a game ala Banjo & Kazooie, or always appearing together like Callie & Marie from Splatoon).

Each day will have a separate topic, and nominations will carry over. As far as actually rating the character's contest strength; I ask that users rank a characters potential strength with one of the following qualifiers - LAW Fodder, Low Fodder, Mid Fodder, High Fodder, Fodder Line, Low Midcarder, Midcarder, High Midcarder, Near Elite, Elite, LAW Tier (capable of beating Link). I will average all the ratings given to a character to come up with their final ranking. I have included a highlighted entrant from Character Battle X on each tier of the strength rankings below, to provide a baseline for each.

Note that LAW Fodder is meant to be a tier reserved for the weakest possible characters to put into a contest. A character will only be placed there if at least 3/4ths of the voters for that day agree on the LAW Fodder rating, and no ratings above Low Fodder are given. If either of those conditions are not met, the character will not be eligible for the LAW Fodder tier.

While Mordin seemed to be around the high fodder range back in 2013, I don't think he will see a large drop-off. The disappointment of Andromeda hit Shepard the hardest - I think other ME trilogy characters will escape that to an extent. ME2 polled really well on the site back in Feb, and Mordin is one of the best-remembered shipmates of the series along with Wrex. High Fodder for Mordin.

I haven't played DMC5 so I have no idea how liked V is as a character. I don't get the sense he is hated, so I will give him Mid Fodder (barely). I definitely think he will go down to low within the next year though.

Soma Cruz. . . I think the fact that he is Dracula will help him get up to Mid Fodder (because lore importance), along with his resemblance to Alucard. Soma's main games Aria of Sorrow and Dawn of Sorrow were well-received, but are definitely niche compared to SOTN.

Mordin Solus: Agree with High Fodder, only because he looked surprisingly good in 2013, almost breaking 40% on Epona with Niko Bellic as the third wheel. Chances are his strength will have taken a minor hit in the interim like Garrus, rather than the major hit series symbol Shepard suffered.

V: Low Fodder - Strike one: his generic grimdark design looks basically nothing like Dante. Strike two: GameFAQs didn't really take to his game in the first place. Strike three: said game is almost a year old by now, so the new character halo has probably faded by now.

Soma Cruz: High Fodder - He already looked not-awful against Snake in 2006, especially if SFF was a factor, and that year saw Alucard's worst showing on record. These days, Castlevania is a big deal here, so I'm confident in pegging Soma as a major beneficiary compared to 2006.

Mordin Solus (Mass Effect) - Mid fodder

Shepard took the biggest hit but Garrus still clearly dropped a lot from 2013 to 2018. He went from almost matching Tidus's 2010 performance on Sub-Zero to almost losing to Ramza.

V (Devil May Cry 5) - Low fodder

Soma Cruz (Castlevania) - Low fodder

He was like the high end of low fodder the one contest he got into and while Castlevania in general has looked good lately, Soma's not a part of the games that have gotten the spotlight. Dawn of Sorrow got tripled in GotD so it wasn't at all strong either but at least for games it had the name value of its brand going for it, which Soma won't. And I don't think the GBA/early DS era is something people here are now generally going to be particularly nostalgic about.

I swear I have it in my head that DMC5 is more popular here than it actually is. It still gets talked about a lot of other places but it did disappear on this site pretty quickly now that I think about it. I'll drop my vote on V to Low Fodder.

For Soma, I think his result against the elite Snake put him in mid fodder range. Also the fact that Dawn of Sorrow even made the GOTD bracket bodes well for Soma.
