I had never been more disappointed to see a thoroughly unlikable one-off character not get killed when he deserved it in the previous episode, and this episode only further cemented that they should have killed him. On the other hand, Amos was great this episode, so that was good.

Falcom just (like minutes ago) announced "Zero and Ao no Kiseki Kai" for Spring 2020. Not seeing platform on the screenshot but I'm assuming a PS4 port. oh man is the dream not dead?

Also announced "Hajimari no Kiseki" for Summer 2020 but I can't tell what it is with these shots. I'm guessing this is the "Cold Steel the 5th" game but not positive.

But yeah, Gorman is fantastic as a villain. He did well in Game of Thrones too. His line about whether or not he just "has one of those faces" had me cracking up.

I mean, in terms of villainy, he's well done aaaaaaaand he's not totally wrong. Like I said, I always find it extremely hard to sympathize with Belters because they always undermine their own causes and can't get out of their own way.

So like the thing with the Belters. And I do see where you're coming from. But in my view it's always been kind of -- in part -- an examination of how well an oppressed class can try to come together in forming a very libertarian approach to politics but things don't go quite right. It's very realistic to me to see some people with good ideas in there and some people with bad ideas. Drummer generally has the right of it IMO and Ashford is catching on. (In fact, you may even feel like he's ahead of her in that regard right now.) And Naomi is, well, Naomi.

But there's just so much in-fighting which I can see why that can cast a pall over things. I think it's like. Throughout human history. There's never really been, IMO, a perfect example of something like the Belter plight where everyone who has suffered goes about things the right way rather than losing hope and turning to vengeance and eventually petulance. It's a pretty three-dimensional approach to have some Belters that I want to see succeed and some that I want to slap.

In this particular case, with the Ilus settlers, I do have a fair bit of sympathy because you know, annoying or not, Marco's right about one thing: the Inners, overall, still reek of smug superiority over these downtrodden people and that sucks. Whenever we see a UN or Martian commander who isn't, like, Souther (RIP lol) good luck trying to get them to go six sentences without insulting the Belters as if they're this singular thought-entity. For the Ilus settlers, this may not have truly been a matter of "life or death" at first but I can't fault them for wanting to break past that smug crap and lay claim to something before it's stripped away from them along with every other world. In their minds that's inevitable and I can't fault 'em.

Full review pending once I've collected my thoughts... although I may even need another rewatch to solidify it. There's so much movie in this one. Spoiler-free initial thoughts:

The Bad:
The pacing is so quick that at times it felt like I was watching at 1.5x speed. This is definitely tied to the fact that there's like two movies worth of plot going on here but only one movie to tell it. Some of the editing is choppy, with scenes cutting off when they shouldn't and bouncing back like crazy.

The Neutral:
I honestly don't know how I feel right now about a certain big reveal. I can't decide if I like or dislike it. While the action is good overall, there's a sequence toward the end involving characters doing something kind of similar to that amazing stuff in The Last Jedi with Rey and Ben going up against Snoke's personal guard unit but it doesn't have nearly as much weight to it and simply doesn't compare. That was kind of a bummer but also shrug. Oh, and Rose is... present.

The Great:
Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, John Boyega and Oscar Isaac acted their asses off in this movie and it shows. This is the best performance from three of them. (Driver was better in The Last Jedi but I don't hold that against The Rise of Skywalker. He's still excellent.) It was rad to see Chewbacca and Threepio given actual roles again. Chewie had The Force Awakens but pretty much (justifiably) sulked his way through The Last Jedi. Threepio was just kinda there in both. They're relevant again and it's very well done. Even characters like Hux were good here. Lando's just as good as you'd hope. As you can see, characters are the heart of this movie. I liken this to sort of an inverse A New Hope in that ANH probably had the most banter between the three leads. (Han and Leia in Empire is even better but in terms of Luke/Han/Leia their back-and-forths are a dime a dozen in the original.) In Rise, we finally see that dynamic forged. It's a dynamic I really wish that I could see continue. Because of this, some otherwise-ridiculous narrative beats landed for me in great form. Ultimately, that's what matters most, I think. And it goes without saying but the cinematography, action, and music are all uniformly excellent. The climactic battle is pretty good for a trilogy-ender and I think I'll appreciate it more and more with time.
