Aquaman's high box office gross can be explained away by the Chinese market. Joker's box office is completely incomprehensible though. How did it make more than a movie with Batman in the title.

It gives a pretty good look at mental health imo. What Batman movie did it beat? BvS?

The mass media gave it hype by trying to scare everyone away

It managed to make both the right and the left fed their victim complexes and outrage at society through the Joker's eyes and actions

It's easily relatable by the mass casuals in our current society. You wouldn't believe how many people believe in this logic for themselves:

The whole narrative of "Society and people are evil, and I am only the way I am because of them. I am a victim of society and no one cares. It transformed me into what I am and I am fully justified in my actions" is insanely relatable in our current society. Just looking at my social media feeds show people easily feels this way.

Its perfect logic tbh. Nah jk but on the other hand there is this particular tribe in Africa I was reading about where, when a member of their society does something bad, instead of beating them and throwing them in the dungeon the whole village gathers around them in a big circle and everyone says one of the good things theyve seen the person do or something positive about them.

it was a movie experience people shared. usually the internet spoils movies like this but even so, i guess people wanted to see it for themselves for the experience.

Joker been a popular villain for quite sometime. didnt wizard magazine give Joker the #1 villain of all time? Killing Joke, death in the family, death of the family were events that standout in readers minds. I felt that this movie captured that - compelling enough to be drawn into Jokers mind only to be shocked by his actions. the movie did well to represent the joker in a way.

Only 330 million of that came from the USA, so using USA-centric media buzz doesn't really get to the heart of how the movie made 700+ million overseas.

  • One of the most popular villains in comic history.
  • Actually pretty damn well-written and takes a great look at mental illness.
I'm not surprised it did so well.

It is going to be refreshing when in 10 years people look back on this Joker fondly and forget about the one who died.
