MEHLVILLE, MO -- A class assignment landed a Missouri teacher on administrative leave and has the NAACP calling for a formal apology.

It happened at an elementary school in Mehlville, Missouri. Students in a fifth grade class were asked to do an assignment setting prices for different things and then reflect on topics such as a free market economy and wealth.

The students set prices for 12 different things: lumber, tar, wool, milk, etc. However, the last item the students were asked to set a price for was quite different than the first 11.

"You own a plantation or farm and therefore need more workers," the question began. "You begin to get involved in the slave trade industry and have slaves work on your farm. Your product to trade is slaves. Set your price for a slave. These could be worth a lot."

"The assignment was culturally insensitive," principal Jeremy Booker said to KMOV in St. Louis. "The teacher has expressed significant remorse."

Booker sent a letter to parents explaining the assignment and the steps being taken to rectify what happened and keep it from happening again.

"The school district is continuing to investigate this event," Booker said. "I am working with district leadership to provide all Blades teachers and staff with professional development on cultural bias in the near future."

Based on the article, it sounds like the point was to show how horrible slavery was by showing how people were casually treated like goods for sale like milk or lumber. I don't think the teacher should have gotten in trouble.

In 100% of possible ways this could have been presented and the lesson could have been formed around it, the question was inappropriate.

Unless there's some kind of context being left out, I don't see any possible justification for such a question. Differently worded thought experiments could possibly be put to good use for teens and adults, but that just sounds like the teacher wanted to shove it in there for some perverse pleasure.

I know it's not the point of this story, but I'm morbidly curious about the prices that kids wrote down. Like if someone said I was worth $3 trillion as a slave I'd be less upset than if they said $1.

I forget where it was, but this reminds me of that "What are the pros and cons of slavery"?

Even in the best possible light, it is utterly unacceptable.

In a not so good light, it looks like it's trying to downplay the horrors that is slavery.

Either way, teacher is too dumb to be teaching if they thought this was a remotely good idea.

How stupid do you have to be to think that up, type it out as a worksheet, proofread it, print out enough copies for a class room of kids, take them to school, and hand them out to the class and not once think to yourself "Yeah this is a terrible idea"...

I always thought it was a lame saying but it would really seem common sense is no longer common.

I can understand the value of asking students how much they think a person is worth, and then segwaying into a historical discussion of how people were in-fact bought with money. But the execution of that idea here was very insensitive and clearly not well thought out.
