Honestly I'd like to see them try... "Disney can't sue all of us," Star Wars superfan cries as he Naruto runs to the fandom council meeting

If it can be established that it is actively and intentionally hurting their income, they could be sued. They could also just plain deliver cease and desist to fan works as well, which would be entirely legal for them to do.

Claiming the franchise. Hes just describing a fan-made meta for canon.

Hes describing Smogon.

From that description? Absolutely nothing. Well other then using the name Star Wars.

But it this is mostly just head canon. Something people do regularly to Star Wars already. It would just be on a more organized thing.

What would be the point though?

Unless they start producing their own knock off Star Wars movies and shit, its just comes off as a bunch of impotent fanboys upset over a couple bad movies.

They don't just want head canon. They want to control official canon because they're petulant children throwing their toys

Isn't this how roughly a third of the MST3K episodes came to be?

That description doesn't make sense, although to be fair, most of the internet doesn't understand the concept of canon.

It's always nice to read something that proves that the author has no idea what they're talking about the more you read it.

Irregardless, for all intensive purposes, I could care less.

But they cant do that because they dont own the rights. They can say what they want is canon all they want but all theyll end up creating is mass accepted head canon. They can call it official all they want.

I will take back the absolutely nothing but about my post. Id be curious what kind of legal battle this would end up being like. Would Disney even care at the end of the day?

Yes. Yes we can. Oh no Rey is a Mary Sue! The horror! The absolute horror!

This would be a bunch of grown men acting childish over a couple bad movies.

They might have a case for wrongful death if someone hears about this and dies laughing.

Cease & Desist isn't a legal concept. There's no requirement to send one. There's no legal consequences that follow if you do. I can send you a C&D stop eating yogurt right now if I wanted.

It's just a formal threat to sue someone if they don't knock it off.

I know. But they want to. They want to seize the rights (how they would theoretically do that i don't know) and alter the canon. Hence "What would the legal ramifications be if the fanbase claimed Star Wars for itself?"

Of course they can't actually do it. My point of sharing this is just to show how deranged these people are, wanting to literally possess Star Wars because they don't like some stuff

A cursory google search seems to imply that you can't lose a copyright, but can potentially lose a trademark.

I'm sure, hypothetically, a coordinated effort to dilute and devalue the Star Wars brand in order to destroy the trademark is possible, but such an operation would be...well...

Shit. New idea for a cyberpunk story! IP Terrorism! *scribbles down notes*
