In America, a "bender" is a drinking spree, which is what the Futurama character is a reference to. Also, bender can refer to a character in the Avatar franchise with the ability to manipulate one of the elements by 'bending' it.

Yeah I live in England and the idea of characters frequently being referred to as benders is impossible to take seriously.

Omg so much has happened. So that's how Aang got stuck in the ice. He was running away and a terrible storm caused him an Appa to fall in the ocean. Poor guy. His relationship with his old mentor was so sweet. Everyone he's ever known is gone, with only a couple still alive but in their... hundreds? Like that crazy Bumi chap.

Really makes you feel sorry for him. Such a big responsibility and the dude's only like... er... well under 16, since that's the age the monks usually tell someone they're an avatar.

And they even explained Zuko's story! It's a complicated feeling. He does bad things, and yet... He's also capable of things like compassion.

I think I blame his dad the Fire Lord, he's the one who's instilling the bad things in Zuko. Maybe it's just me but if he was raised by his Uncle general iroh then he would be a good person.

I'm not sure what to think of Iroh by the way. Smarter (and stronger) than he lets on, but doesn't seem like he has an appetite for war, and I wonder if he's secretly a good person that just wants peace and doesn't want to fight all these people.

On topic, the Fire Nation struck first and hard, and secured an easy early victory.
The Earth Nation is only a loose association, so they managed to hold out for 100 years, but the war is pretty much already over when Aang returns.

Yeah, it's mainly the fact that their native element happens to compliment coal-powered vehicles and their industrial revolution before the main series. For the most part, Air Nomads and Water Tribe were fairly primitive, and most of the Earth Kingdom's technology revolved around transportation and other quality of life improvements, possibly because of the size of their continent.

@Cookie_Bag the word bender has almost never been used to mean someone who bends things, the most common use pre Futurama and this show was the slur. It's bad taste and questionable for the show to have used it

Regarding ages, it's clear Zuko is older than Aang. But... doesn't it seem like Sokka and Katara are older than Aang too? They're certainly taller. Just wondering because Aang seems to have a thing for Katara but she only ever pays attention to the guest of the week like that one earth bender or the handsome Jet. But if she's also older then he's not gonna have a chance any time soon at his age of 12.

Sokka and Katara are definitely older. She's fourteen and I believe Sokka is sixteen.

Zuko is also sixteen which explains a lot of his character.

Iroh is much older than the Fire Lord, yeah. By about fifteen years.

But I don't see how learning healing is so wrong, that seems like an incredibly useful skill

Oh my god oh my god! Just saw the last 2 episodes of book 1. That damn Zhao brought a whole fleet of nations to attack the water tribe! But they defended their home well.

Then he tried to kill the moon (spirit of the moon represented by a fish as I understand it) but Iroh warned him not to. But then he did it anyway! Iroh was pissed. Also the avatar gang were right there but Iroh didn't care, he just wanted to protect the fish.

Zuko tried to take Aang who was trapped in the spirit world

Yeah, you're in for a treat with books 2 and 3, TC.

Oh, and the biggest spoiler of all, Aang's ultra avatar state! It was insane, he became this huge fish monster and utterly wrecked the Fire nation ships!

I enjoy that kind of stuff personally, but I'll always appreciate it more when they abandon the giant spirity deus ex machina and let the characters achieve through their own wit and ability. It's why episodes like The Drill and the battle to get inside the Earth King's palace are my favorite action-y moments in the series.

Wait just one minute. What is that blue stuff that the new villain Azula is channeling? Is that... lightning? But she's a fire bender. They never established lightning as one of the fight groups, are they jumping the shark???

Let's just say that there are...advanced techniques for the best of the best of the bender types.

Water and earth benders will get their new toy soonish, but you'll have to watch Korra to see what an air bender can do when they just don't give a fuck.

The Avatar is the only hybrid bender. Everyone else has either one bending ability, or none.

No as no one else has ever watched this show and picked up on that plot point >_>. Then again you wondered why the counry forcibly invading other nations are the bad guys lol.

You already saw Iroh redirect lightning in The Storm. Also, its a firebending ability because fire and lightning are both plasma.

Azula also just has blue fire, I dunno if that's what you're talking about.

Oh shit you're right I didn't even think twice about that. I just saw it as a funny scene since Iroh looked comedic all scorched. But for it to be foreshadowing for a later plot point is just... brilliant. This show is so much smarter than it has any right to be, how is this from Nickelodeon (I didn't even know they still made cartoons well into the 2000s)

So that's Ty Lee. Were the posts itt that were into her just like her because she has an exposed midriff? How very pink ranger of her.

So Azula's entire posse is a bunch of highly trained girls, interesting. So basically the fight is now a three way between Azula, Aang, and Zuko. How long does he even have before the comet arrives?

The comet comes at the end of the summer. Book 2 takes place in spring.
