It's not quite anime, but it's not quite "next gen" 3d.

And what is with all that bloom? It's... it's too much. It's like a perpetual bloom filter that's really overdone.

It's like this creepy 3d model anime look. I'm not saying they have to be photo realistic final fantasy tier graphics or anything but at least celshaded or something, to make them look less ugly.

I've noticed this trend ever since the few jrpgs post ps2 era came out.

To me that looks more uninspiring than ugly, but either way, not good

Not every game suffers from this, the ones that maintain 2d look or opt for a unique design avoid this pitfall, but the generic ones have this look. Or even the non generic ones since these are from established companies and series. Is it the same engine that churns out this high bloom jrpg anime model look?

Neither of those are striving to be Gen 8 games, why'd you try to lump them into that category?

They don't look ugly, but the animations could really use work in both.

And I don't know why you picked one of your examples to be a Falcom Kiseki game, when it's incredibly niche even in Japan and they're known for having really small budgets.

Instead of, idk, Dragon Quest XI, FFXV, or Tales of Arise.

This
That Tales game was developed for both ps3 and ps4. Its optimized for neither. Trails of Cold Steel 3 was at one point going to be a Vita game.

Falcom's other game trails in the sky looked fine imo. When anime is 2d it's fine, but in 3d there's this certain uncanny look to them. In gen 6, the ps2 jrpgs didn't didn't look like that. I particularly like the celshaded look of stuff like rogue galaxy. I prefer when it looks more cartoony. Or uniquely design like persona 5.
