Valve brought lootboxes to modern gaming, but no one cares

Valve is why origin exists because they wouldn't let ea sell dlc outside of steam where they didnt get their 30%, ea are greedy bastards who don't want their games on steam!

Valve buys up developers and doesn't let them release a game without a monetization plan, no one cares

Valve does paid mods where valve keeps 70%, no one cares.

Valve black list talent, that's still in effect for over 2 years, because he made a joke about Chinese censorship and masterbation, no one cares.

Valve picks up and drops products like Google, no one cares

But make sure you you get your pc vr ready so you can play a waggle tech demo since they're using the community thirst for a half life to keep their vr investment from being a disaster

Epic offers devs more revenue and pays indie devs to break even funding for launcher exclusively, the internet loses its mind.

Gog, origin, epic, and steam all have in their agreement that they can scan your drives. And only 1 of 4 has an actual plan if the service has to shut down, and I'll give you a hint its not valve. Only 3 of 4 makes the internet lose its mind.

Valve is everything wrong with modern gaming, but they get a free pass because uhhh steam sale? And they do it all as a private company so they can't even blame their practices on needing to appease shareholders.

What was Valve's paid mods
Their lootboxes are submissions to the workshop where artists get paid less than minimum wage, if, they're "lucky" enough to get picked.

Imagine the shit storm if ea picked 10 fan submissions skins, kept 70% for themselves, then split the remaining 30 10 ways. Because that's valve's business model for their games.

You can definitely make an argument about the ethics of the workshop payment rules, but "paid mods" is a wildly misleading way to call it. At least for TF2 which was my Valve game of choice. They're actually adding that shit in and coding it and you can access it ingame without paying.

Thanks for proving my point and defending paid mods because valve did it, so it can't be bad.

The artist are creating the models and animations. And valve doesn't support them as they update their game until its broken enough to get upvoted to reddit.

Which is just more examples of how they exploit free labor from their community. No one cares when valve releases broken and buggy patches that would have been picked up by having basic qa. Because why bother when can go from dev to prod and use your users for it because they want those sweet upvotes.

EA, Activision, epic, capcom, koei, they dream of getting away with what not only valve gets away with, but are actively defended for.

It's well established that Gamers have a mostly unwavering loyalty to Valve/Steam, probably because of their iconic position in the PC gaming pantheon and also because they were the first to properly establish a storefront/launcher like they did. Its basically more deep rooted console fanboyism for pc gamers.

Just playing devil's advocate, but I feel like private companies are more sensitive when it comes to publishing content critical of *foreign* countries because of the greater political implications that decision can have for their own country.

Look at it this way - China sees a critical piece of media on the biggest digital game retailer in the US; it accuses the US of waging an information warfare against China, because in China the government *does* control what a Chinese company is allowed to develop and publish, and they can easily be applying that logic to the United States even though we don't have such a system. Because at the end of the day it's a US storefront.

It's just a matter of responsible use of free speech. Can Valve do it? Yes. Should they? Maybe it's better not to considering the possible consequences.

And they could easily just publish it everywhere except China, but then people would find a way to complain about that, too.

What are the products being restricted from Steam?
I want to back this up - I was fully okay with Hatred being rejected from Steam, considering that it had enough buzz round it to sell copies on its own. When gamers were protesting Hatred's right to exist on Steam, it had enough word of mouth that it would have sold thousands of copies based on its name alone, despite being a pointlessly edgy pile of dogshit with barely any redeeming gameplay features outside of shooting civilian characters with no penalty.

The Hatred devs could have set up a sales link on their webpage to get 100% of the profits from every sale of the game, even as they fought against this supposedly unfair and illegal refusal to distribute their shitty game. They didn't, however, and banked on the public outrage to get their game reinstated on a platform that didn't want them.

Hatred could have stood on its own two feet and made some degree of profit considering its infamy. I fucking hated Hatred, and how they courted this "censorship" mob to "fight on their behalf" when they had enough attention to garner their own following and sell their title truly individually from a storefront like Steam.

Tell me which pro-Hong Kong title has been treated unfairly. I personally want Hong Kong to be democratic, especially considering the abuse that mainland Chibses officers have exercised in trying to bring Hong Kong in line to the laws that China wants to inflict on the country. Is it a cheap "free hong kong!" mobile clicker game presented by a cheap asshole trying to capitalise? Is it an attempt to unite Hong Kong protestors under one banner? I don't know what's supposedly being banned here. And in the best possible scenario, I would want to contribute to the liberation of Hong Kong from Chinese rule.

Considering that I have no fucking idea what it is in the first place, I can't even say "I'll only support it if it's worthy". What is this thread actually about?

I don't know if it's fair to bring Hatred up here.

Valve's publishing policies were vastly different back then, they could be more restrictive without appearing hypocritical. Now that they've loosened up the requirements a lot, it looks bad when they specifically prohibit a playable/functioning product.

Also, Steam already had the Postal games on it, so it was kind of weird they could justify that but not Hatred...

I can understand the confusion around justifying Postal 1 and/or 3 on Steam and not Hatred. But it remains that Steam removed Hatred for potentially being violence for violence's sake, before being met by a massive political backlash.

And my point here isn't even necessarily about Hatred. I don't know what "pro-Hong Kong" game was banned for its ties to Hong Kong's present political situation. All I know is that there's an actual point to a game being billed pro- or anti-Hong Kong, while Hatred had an external fanbase fighting for its political right to exist on Steam from day one.

This thread doesn't even present any games that are "pro-Hong-Kong". What games are being treated worse than Hatred, despite Hatred being a fucking turd of a game that could have courted it's own independent audience without the pointlessly political dogshit garnered to get it reinstated on Steam? I want to know what game was attacked for its anti-China sentiment.

Wow, look at this post offering a video that actually explains the game and the circumstances around its release and subsequent removal/controversy.

Yes, it looks like a Unity asset flip. But the fact that it exists in a market of Unity asset flips, that face no consequences at all and espouse the exact same gameplay experiences in the long run, is telling. People like Digital Homicide were able to exist with tens or hundreds of games on Steam with the same controls, aesthetics and source code. And it took weeks, months or years for Steam to react to that same exploitative, spammy shit. But when a pro-Hong Kong shitshow arrives, it's time to pull out the prime play-testers and actually get critical of what's going on.

What pro-China games have been removed since 2010? Which pro-Hillary or pro-Trump games have been removed? We've clearly seen dumb shitpost Trump supporter "games" allowed on the platform, so Steam has admitted political products onto their storefront in the last 4 years. What legitimately stood out about this dogshit game, aside from it's political leanings?

What were the HL2 paid mods? And I'm not talking standalone Source games like NS2.

The problem with Skyrim's paid mods is that certain mods had certain dependencies and then it created this stupid nightmare situation where now a free mod couldn't exist because the creator needed assets from a paid mod. It was just a really dumb, convoluted system that wasn't really thought out clearly before they launched it.
