Just heard the Wild get next year's Winter Classic. Thanks for exhausting every other team 50 million times over NHL, but it was long overdue.

Columbus is due to be in an outdoor game, and they have the shared expansion history with the Wild, and the advantage of never having been in an outdoor game before. But not really the rivalry factor (or the broader fanbase). Or Columbus will hang on to host their own game at Ohio Stadium I guess...

If you stick to teams in the midwest or northeast and knock out Canadian teams and anyone else who's been in an outdoor game in the past few years, you do start to run out of options. Chicago could really happen I guess, lol...

This years winter classic was amazing. How was it being there smuffin?

I mean, it was a cool experience, and I don't regret going. But the venue left a lot to be desired. It turns out that "historic" is also a synonym for "shitty." It was just way too crowded. Concessions and restrooms were unusable because the lines were insane. Usually so long that the end of them wasn't even in sight of the thing they were for, so you had to force your way through an unmoving mass of people constantly asking them what they were in line for to even find the back of the line. I went out with 5 minutes left in the first for food, and by the time the 2nd period was starting, I was only halfway through, so I said fuck it and went back to my seat (and so, didn't eat all day). Even just walking through the concourse was basically impossible. Even though we got there a little early, I couldn't do any of the pre-game stuff because there were just way too many people everywhere. It literally took us 30 minutes from when we entered the stadium just to get to our seats, because it was just a wall of people, mostly not moving.

Game was fun though. Our seats were great, pretty high up (just a few rows below the press box) but perfectly centered. Could still see well though. Basically any of the wide views of like the "whole field surface" you saw on NBC was basically the view we had. The section we were in was mostly Preds fans, but they were clearly knowledgeable and into it and were still southerners, so everyone was nice enough. We left with about 5 minutes left in the 3rd fearing the crowds. It was better on the way out than on the way in and we managed to avoid most of the traffic getting out (were super paranoid given that we had a 3.5 hour drive back to Houston and work the next day).

Fun story though, once we got out of Dallas we stopped at a Whataburger right along 45. I'm still wearing my jersey, at the counter is some cowboy looking guy, he says "So you guys got out of that whole mess quick enough, huh?" Start chatting with him and it turns out he was part of the hired "entertainment." I guess he's a professional rodeo guy and apparently they paid him $600 to ride the mechanical bull a few times. But he says "I also got this" and whips out a puck... it turns out when he wasn't riding the mechanical bull, he was just kind of hanging out near the edge of the glass, and when a puck flew over and out of play he just grabbed it and nobody bugged him about it.

I'd definitely recommend going if it's at a modern venue but the Cotton Bowl just wasn't able to handle this. I have no idea how they do OU/Texas there every year... it really did put a bit of a damper on the experience.

I actually think it'll be the Oilers. The NHL needs its next generation of stars. This will be for McDavid, like the Buffalo one was for Crosby...

Ol Dipshit Colliton decided down a goal with two minutes remaining and on the power play not to pull the goalie for a 6-on-4 situation.

I think I've fired him about seven times over at this point.

I mean, you are shitting on their defence all the time, would you trust them to not allow an empty net shortie? Advantage + Risk of 6 on 4 vs. Lesser Advantage of 5 on 4...

Fair point. There was absolutely the possibility of Gustafsson fumbling a pass, then falling on his ass skating backwards attempting to prevent an empty netter.

Yeah, I think Colliton ran the numbers on his shit team and decided it'd be better to lose by 1 goal than 2. And they still lost by 2 anyways lol.

Kovalchuk signed to league minimum two-way deal with the Canadiens, I thought he was going back to the KHL? This is certainly a twist... Yahoo Sports with the vicious assessment: https://twitter.com/YahooSportsNHL/status/1213140836352962561

Man, Draisaitl just delivered one of the most blatant and intentional elbows to the head I've ever seen. But of course, since Krug just got back up and kept playing, it was only a minor. I know it's not honorable, but if I were a coach in this league, I'd tell all my guys "If you get hit in the head, go down and stay down" because the refs have proven time and time again that is the only difference between a major and minor penalty.

If the league has any guts at all, they'll give him at least 3 games for this.

On the plus side, Kuznetsov is just a basic "illness" so a decent shot he doesn't even miss tomorrow? And Crosby is back at practice!

But I am also seriously missing Kuemper on my team and am just hoping when he comes back, his level is at the pre-injury game all-star calibre rather than, uh, the gajillion goals he let in that one game he got injured...

Kuemper has definitely been amazing other than his last game >_>
Crosby is back soon as well. I actually had Tarasenko as well but this league only allows 1 IR person so I had to drop him

Points ain't everything! He's barely positive in +/- and pretty weak on shots and hits. My current starting lineup is Seguin, Landeskog, Perron, Killorn, Teravinen, and Svechnikov.

By the Average Stats ranking on Yahoo's default scoring, the only person on that list he's higher than is Landeskog (who underachieved a lot early on but has been better since coming back from injury).

You can probably find someone on the waiver wire ranked pretty close to where he is!

Thinking about any Caps fan who left the game to beat traffic, after the empty netter made it 4-2 with a minute left for the Sharks.

It really is never over until it's over... even if you do have Holtby in nets.

That was a 1-0 game where frankly they got outplayed most of the second and third period and simply found a way to survive.

The Islanders seem to be particularly good at that kind of game this year.

Actually, while Nashville has underachieved, they're not even that bad really. Only two games out of a playoff spot if you account for games in hand. And even that's only because both the Oilers and Canucks have gone on winning streaks lately.

If I was in Vegas I'd bet the 'over' on any game Holtby starts, since you know he's good to let in at least 3 and the Washington offence is consistently robust. The question is whether he stops there or goes the 4+ route.

Well... let's see if I would've theoretically made or lost money tonight, I guess, the O/U for Caps/Flyers is 6.5, I like my chances.

(Jets/Leafs also 6.5... kind of in a similar boat there!)

Holtby has been like this for several years tho. Middling stats but got it together when it really mattered in the playoffs (well, once he did that, at least).

My guess is the Caps are poised to become the next Blackhawks. Going to reward their cup winners for past performance and probably lock themselves into some really unfavorable contracts. It's a shame, but what can you do?
