Do you really play them for the story though or do you just enjoy a story that is in a video game?

Having gone to an elementary school play just last week to see my niece, it was amazing, but not for the right reasons.

I make my own stories up when I play RPGs lately because most of the time the writers are really terribad these days staryu

i very rarely play games that don't place importance on its story. don't mistake that for saying video games have top notch stories, though.

I think the only instance thats been the case for me was when I was long bored of GoW gameplay but was interested in seeing the story through. But that hasnt gotten to buy Gears 5 yet.

I detest competitive multiplayer games these days. I don't have the reaction time to face real humans anymore like I used to. Co op MP is fun, like I love the Borderlands series, play 3 a lot. I prefer single player games though.

lol I actually hate multipalyer as well, but if a single player game is bad a good story won't save it.

I used to when I was young play video games for their fantastical world and story. Now that videos are much better storywise than when I grew up I still do but I get higher quality.

I play Senran Kagura for the story and characters

there are games that are played for the story. for example, old isometric rpgs don't always have the best gameplay but they have amazing writing. see: planescape torment

Baldur's gate 2 with throne of bhaal is some of the finest writing in gaming, period.

Also, pro tip, if you have a phone or tablet with a stylus(i have the note 8 for example), the stylus functions perfectly as a mouse for the mobile version. Makes playing it on your phone not only doable, but quite fun.

Think about it...what percentage of most games is about the story? Like what percent has you watching cutscenes and reading dialogue? I take the typical RPG of 80 hours and what percent is spent watching story? MAYBE 5%? Maybe 10% if it's more involved?

In either case, it's a very small percentage. So this is why the "I play it for the story" people are "liars" because, if ALL they wanted was storyline, then they'd hate playing most video games. Imagine wanting nothing but storyline but it took you 80 hours to get and, even then, you only gets storyline in 5 minute scenes and then you're back to that pesky gameplay.

If you only play games for the story you would HATE this. You'd have to play hours and hours of gameplay just to get to the small amounts of story you want. I can't think of a more inefficient way to get storyline and this would be horrible if ALL you wanted was story.

And let's not even get into the fact that most video game storylines are very elementary and cookie-cutter and are the same stuff we've seen in TV and movies for years and those do it better. And I'm not ripping video game devs...games are simply a very difficult forum for storytelling, period, especially since story is usually the last priority in a lot of games since other things take precedent.

So, I'm sorry, there's no way these people play games "just for the story." They would HAVE to enjoy the gameplay of these games to some extent or most games would be horrible experiences for these people.

I'm not ripping the people who say it...but the comment just doesn't make a lick of sense. Unless it's a visual novel, no one plays games "just for the story"...otherwise they would hate video games.

I've played a lot of games just for the story. Final Fantasy VIII, the Megaman Battle Network series, and the Megaman Zero series all come to mind.

For the latter 2 I literally input a cheat code for invincibility so I could breeze through the gameplay. FF8 I at least kinda enjoy the gameplay, though.

I disagree with you entirely. There is an added depth to gaming that makes the story better.
