AFC Playoff Picture

Playoff Teams
1. Hawks 12-3 (clinched playoffs, AFC West leader)
2. Dolphins 10-5 (won AFC East)
3. Jaguars 9-6 (won AFC South)
4. Ravens 9-6 (won AFC North)
5. Raiders 11-4 (clinched playoffs, Wild Card #1)
6. Patriots 9-6 (Wild Card #2)

In Contention
7. Broncos 9-6
8. Colts 8-7 (likely eliminated)

Eliminated
9. Bengals 7-8
10. Pioneers 7-8
11. Steelers 6-9
12. Browns 5-10
13. Bills 5-10
14. Titans 4-11
15. Chiefs 4-11
16. Jets 4-11

Hawks vs Raiders decides the #1 and #5 seed. Winner takes the division and home field advantage through playoffs. Loser goes on the road against one of Jags/Ravens.

If the Dolphins win, they earn the #2 seed.

If the Dolphins lose, Jags win, and Ravens win, the Dolphins are #2, Jags #3, and Ravens #4

If the Dolphins lose, Jags win, Ravens lose, the Dolphins are #2, Jags #3, and Ravens #4

If the Dolphins lose, Jags lose, Ravens win, the Ravens are #2, Dolphins #3, and Jags #4

If the Jags and Ravens both lose, the tiebreaker goes to common games record, and I don't feel like researching that.

I want to say that the Colts are eliminated due to tiebreakers against the Pats, but to be safe, they would have to win and Pats/Broncos both lose in order to make it in.

If the Pats win, they earn the second wild card.

If the Pats lose and Broncos win, the Broncos earn the second wild card.

If the Pats and Broncos both lose, the Pats earn the second wild card assuming the Colts would still be eliminated (three-way tie makes Colts tiebreaker over Broncos meaningless and Pats would top the others with a 7-5 conference record).

NFC Playoff Picture

Playoff Teams
1. Packers 11-4 (won NFC North)
2. Buccaneers 10-5 (won NFC South)
3. Cowboys 10-5 (lead NFC East)
4. Rams 8-7 (lead NFC West)
5. Vikings 10-5 (clinched Wild Card #1)
6. Pumpkins 9-6 (likely clinched wild card #2)

In Contention
7. Seahawks 8-7
8. Wildcats 8-7

Eliminated
9. Giants 8-7
10. Redskins 8-7
11. Falcons 6-9
12. 49ers 6-9
13. Lightning 5-10
14. Bears 5-10
15. Panthers 5-10
16. Lions 4-11

Pumpkins Week 16 win eliminates the Giants and Redskins as the Pumpkins hold a tiebreaker over both (5-1 in NFC East, 2-0 against Redskins) whether or not it is a two-team or 3+ team tie for final wild card spot.

Packers earn home field through NFC with a win or Bucs loss

Buccaneers earn home field through NFC with a win and Packers loss

NFC West winner and Vikings are locked into the #4 and #5 seed respectively and will face off in the Wild Card round

Cowboys win NFC East with a win or Pumpkins loss

A Cowboys loss and Pumpkins win results in a Pumpkins NFC East crown

Pumpkins unquestionably clinch playoff spot with a win. However, I am pretty sure that they already have and are locked into the 6 seed. They have the Rams to thank for that. Because there is no scenario where the Rams match the Pumpkins record and not win the NFC West, the Rams win over the Pumpkins in Week 15 will come back to haunt the Pumpkins. Their only potential opponents are the Wildcats and Seahawks. In common games between Pumpkins and Wildcats, the Pumpkins will have gone at worst 3-2 (W vs Redskins x2, W vs Bears, L Rams, TBD Bucs) and Wildcats went (W/L vs Rams, W vs Bears, L vs Redskins, L vs Bucs). Pumpkins will go no worse than 7-5 in the NFC and the Seahawks no better than 6-6, so the Seahawks lose out on that tiebreaker.

Rams win and they win NFC West.

Rams lose, Wildcats win, Wildcats win NFC West no matter what the Seahawks do.

Rams lose, Wildcats lose, Seahawks win, Seahawks win NFC West

If all three teams lose, Rams should win NFC West due to division record eliminating Seahawks and common games record eliminating Wildcats.

So for those who want cliff notes on the playoff picture (I realized an error that I made):

- Only non-clinched spots up for grabs are AFC second wild card (Pats or Broncos) and NFC West winner (Rams, Wildcats, or Seahawks).

- Hawks vs Raiders outcome will decide AFC West and #1 AFC seed and first wild card and #5 seed.

- Dolphins can be #2 or 3 seed

- Jags can be #3 or 4 seed

- Ravens can be #2 or 4 seed

- Packers can be #1 or 2 seed

- Bucs can be #1, 2, or 3 seed

- Cowboys can be #2, 3, or 5 seed

- NFC West winner will be #4 seed

- Vikings can be #5 or 6 seed (erroneously locked them at #5 but will be #6 if Pumpkins win NFC East and Vikings lose)

- Pumpkins can be #2, 3, or 6 seed

I'm not someone who judges teams based on record but one who encompasses team and individual performances.

The Bills are arguably the worst team in the league. The Titans and Chiefs are also in that discussion, but the Titans have a stunningly good turnover differential and the Chiefs...well maybe it is the Chiefs. Bills have had pretty good special teams play this season at least.

Oh hey Richardson is up to 12 Sacks in his rookie season. That's pretty good considering I've only ever had 3 players get double digit sacks in a season before and they were all linebackers (Tufts 10, Laurinaitis 11, McClain 13)

So I guess I may have 1 positive to pull from the season and hopefully he's increased in rating a little despite the losing because lord knows the rest of the team must have regressed

Your defense has been fine. I would expect little performance-based regression on that side when I update next season.

Granted sacks aren't everything but the 8th DE off the board is the one on the sacks leaderboard.

Is Melvin Gordon a shoe in for offensive rookie of the year or is his yardage based on ridiculous volume? I think I remember you saying his YPC wasn't great?

As everyone knows due to hearing it from me ad nauseum, the keys to success are defense and running the ball. All but one of the previous 22 Super Bowl participants had both a Top 16 rushing attack and Top 10 Defense. Assuming these rankings more or less hold, your Super Bowl contenders this season will be among the following teams:

Cowboys
Dolphins
Hawks
Raiders
Vikings
Pats/Broncos

Jags and Packers narrowly miss out

He is a shoe-in for Madden. I will certainly not be voting for him in the user ballot given he has more than 100 carries than the second highest in the league and has the third-worst YPC in the league. Ballot will probably be him, Beckham Jr., either Locker or Murray at QB and two OL replacement choices (G Duvernay and OT Conklin most likely). I honestly don't know the criteria each user has when they decide who to vote for, but I have a feeling one of the OL will win if users who do submit ballots don't dismiss OL based on principle. Conklin might lead the league in blocks and Durvernay might have the most absurd block:sack ratio we have had from an interior OL.

I think that says more about how having a good defense is a must.

At least 7 out of the top 10 defenses are playoff teams/contenders (and presumably there's others that don't meet the top 16 rushing criteria)

I guess the better question is this. Is there a Top 10 Defense that isn't a playoff contender? And is there a Top 10 Rushing team that isn't a playoff contender?

Good lord. This season has taken a drastic turn for the not-good in the second half. 7 losses in a row...

Yeah, you and the Jets sat at 4-4 and have each lost seven straight and in contention for the #1 pick. Jets were hammered with the most injuries in the league by a decent margin while your offense completely cratered.

On the plus side, we might have our 12th different team pick #1 in as many seasons (remember there was no NFL Draft in the inaugural season).

If the Jets do pick #1, they will far and away be the best team to pick #1 overall. They have the the #20 O and D, a positive turnover differential, and several players are/were having career best seasons to where they will be on award ballots and maybe named to the Pro Bowl.

Oh, weren't we on a streak of the number 1 pick every year always being a brand new team since the league started? How is that looking?

As the conference seeding indicates, Jets and Lions are fighting for #1. If they both lose, I don't know who gets it, but it would guarantee a 12th team in as many seasons picking #1.

I edited this in my above post, but do not forget that our first NFL Draft was not until S2.

Really thought that the Bears, Titans, or Bills would be up for the #1 pick. Glad it's not me though!

Anyone with 5 or fewer wins still has a chance, but the Jets and Lions are "in control" of their #1 pick destiny, especially the Jets since we know they have a higher priority than the Chiefs and Titans. Lions are unknown and could be fourth in that pecking order, but at least we know they have a chance if they lose

Are Madden cross conference schedule cyclical or does it just do whatever the hell it wants? I know the AFC North played the NFC East this season, West last season, South the year before that. I can't remember the last time I played the NFC North though.

It is cyclical. I distinctly remember playing the NFC East in S3, S7, and S11.

Hmm, I wonder if it also syncs up in conference fixtures on the same schedule which would mean it only needed 4 fixture patterns for the league with home/away variance

NFC East - 6-7 Wins + 6 Wins
NFC West - 10 Wins + 10 Wins
NFC South - 10 Wins + 9 Wins
NFC North - 7 Wins

That also means I am 0-8 against the NFC East since I know I went 6-0 in the AFC North in the year I ended up 6-10 and I went 0-4 against them this season
