That's not true. Merida from Brave is a good character and she looks like a Muppet.

But making a character more attractive (or attempting to do so) is an easy way of trying to sway audience perception of who they like. It's a trick literally as old as cinema itself. Hell, I bet it was a routine in the days of stage plays before motion pictures were ever a thing.
