I have not played a Zelda or even a Nintendo game in like a decade. I really should buy a switch someday and start playing these games again. Hell, I think I only got past the first dungeon in Twilight Princess when I rented it one time

The easy answer is that exploring an overworld has traditionally been a central part of Zelda games, and BotW's overworld is light-years better than SS's "Here's a sea of nondescript white clouds with three holes that will teleport you to the levels you want." For most fans of the Zelda series, that alone is going to be enough to put BotW ahead. On the dungeon side of things, though, SS definitely had the better dungeons (some of the best 3D ones, awkward swimming aside), so I can understand why somebody might have preferred it if they don't care as much about having an interesting overworld.

Never played SS (or Hyrule Warriors or OoT Master Quest), and only partly played BotW before losing interest.
Beyond that, I've played every other Zelda game.

and YOU should know why considering i done told you already but i can go over it again if you'd like

the first legend of zelda game was the only one that was ACTUALLY open world. nothing was ever off limits. you want to go wandering into a dungeon that you are not even remotely prepared for? go for it. try that shit in LTTP and youre gonna find SOMETHING blocking your forward progress and its gonna require you to go out and "level up" until youre able to enter. there are gigantic sections of the map that are behind a dozen or more road blocks.

you start the main part of the game and it presents you with the gigantic and exciting world map for you to explore. yay, i get to play zelda now right? nope. before you go exploring you have to talk to this old lady. oh and she wants you to talk to this kid about god knows what. oh and that kid is gonna send you after and old man. and then before you realize it several game hours have passed and you still havent gotten the opportunity to explore the place you ORIGINALLY wanted to explore. its a fucking roadblock simulator. but hey, at least LTTP TRIED to capture the feeling of the original. at least it wasnt a complete and total garbage piece of shit like ocarena and every game that came out after it.

every one since the original has been a hold your hand on a rail storytime presenting itself as an adventure and because people are so goddamn nostalgic they just eat it up without realizing theyve totally deviated from what makes a zelda game a zelda game or what makes a zelda game a GOOD game

Hmmm... I didnt say I didnt know. But is it really that open? I remember that you can do the first certain dungeons out of order. But for like he last three of four, you need to do those in a certain order, right? Because you need certain items, IIRC.

That being said, if true, that means BotW is more open than that. That one was very open. Like super open...

I disliked it before it was popular, so no.

Zelda had the same problem for me that the Mario games did - once they switched from 2D to 3D it felt like most of the charm went out of the series.

Though it probably doesn't help that I was already in college before OoT and SM64 came out, and my gaming tastes had grown way beyond by that point. It's entirely possible that I'd have been just as cold on a new Super Mario World game or a hypothetical Link to the Past 2.

Those are pretty much the games where I feel both franchises peaked, though, even if it's only nostalgia and a lack of giving a shit about any of the newer games.

I personally like Super Mario 64 (and is one of my top 5 games). Beyond that, I agree most of the charm went out, until Odyssey.

I think I wouldn't like it without motion controls. I would at least want them for that one battle. I think I had a ton of fun with the boss Kolotos. And I feel it would be as fun with regular controls. From what I can remember...

IIRC the biggest problem I had with Skyward Sword is the motion controls made it VERY hard to play while sitting or laying on a Sofa. The worst was probably trying to roll a bomb forward.

ALBW in particular specifically aimed to recapture the open-world feel of LoZ, and there's very little story-based gating of dungeons (it follows the "do these three then you can do these eight" thing, but you can do each set in any order) because the items needed for the dungeons can just be rented/bought outright. If it's the open-world freedom you're looking for over anything else, it might be worth giving a shot.

And then, of course, BotW eschewed the dungeon focus of other Zelda games in favour of having a big open world that can be freely explored. It's just an open-world game.

It did feel a little contrived, and the fact that you could pretty easily rent all of the items at once with no penalty really kind of took away most of the sense of progression and choice. I think a better system would have been to offer a choice of three items as a reward for beating each dungeon, so you'd still have the freedom to decide what order you want to do the dungeons in, but you'd actually have to work to get the items.

That actually reminds me a bit of Cadence of Hyrule. In that game, when you opened a big chest, you would choose between three items. Though, because of how the game worked, you were usually fine without them. Though, I did need a certain item to get to an area, so...
