A movement guide is good for fundamentals. Knowing how to just move around is a big part of it.

Both

Characters are usually based around practice mode against something that's not fighting back then when you get down the controls enough you can try against someone who's willing to train with you. So let's say you wanted to learn Bayonetta's counter timing, you'd just get someone who's willing to do the same attacks over and over. Then onto AI or actually fighting other people.

In general pick someone you're relatively comfortable with killing the AI without spamming the same thing over and over and look up a thread on smahs forums or something or YT videos and go from there.

The best way I improved was by attending locals and being part of the competitive scene. I used to attend a tournament almost everyday for like a month or two. I went from being constantly 3 stocked to going close games with some of the better players here in Houston. Friendlies are also very important.

But that depends on what your goal is. If you just want to beat your friends or play on WiFi just watch YouTube videos and grind it out online.

Robin tbh

A very solid character. I use Robin every now and then. Robin has a variety of tools to work with. Levin Sword, though limited, has good knockback and high KO potential. Thunder may seem useless but its a good poke move. Elthunder is good for zoning and edge guarding. Arcthunder is good for shield pressure. Thoron is amazing. Use the Levin Sword for knockback then snipe the opponent with a well placed Thoron. This may take practice against human opponents.

Arcfire is good for a combo or follow up. Its also good for ledge trapping. Elwind is very useful. It can be used to safely spike or edge guard opponents. You can also use it to escape an opponent edge guarding you by changing directions on the second wind.

Just make sure you dont spam some of these moves. Otherwise, youll be at a severe disadvantage if youre out of tomes and the Levin Sword. Make sure to mix up zoning and close quarters. Robin has disjointed hitboxes which gives the character higher priority. Robins grab range is fairly poor so only go for a grab if you know youll get it. That goes for Nosferatu, too.

As far as general Smash advice, know your movement options. Dont keep jumping or double jumping at every chance. Use shorthops and aerial moves since theyre quite decent for Robin. Dodges and rolling are useful but make sure you arent doing those too often or else you become predicable. Same goes for shielding.

Edge guarding or chasing your opponent off stage is important. Off stage gameplay is vital because some characters will take forever to KO because of their insane recoveries. This takes practice to get decent at so dont be discouraged if you fail and SD a lot. You dont always have to chase your opponent off stage but it does help to know how to do this. Throwing out Arcfire while they are at the ledge or something is an option. There are certain characters you probably shouldnt follow like Wii Fit Trainer but you learn this over time.

As far as knowing to play against certain characters, youll have to get in many matches probably online or at locals. Luckily, most people follow a flowchart so once you play against a few Joker or Ness players for the example, youll know what to expect from most of them.

Playing 1v1 matches will get you to improve for sure no matter what. As long as you understand what youre doing wrong when you lose, youll get better. I wouldnt say Im some great player or anything but Ive had the opportunity to play against a few of the pro players. Some of the matches were close and I did win a few but not a lot. I figure that I at least know some things. Smash Ultimate is purely fundamentals. If you can figure out how to properly space your attacks, play mind games, read your opponent, and punish when the opponent makes errors then youll get far in this game.
