Too harsh, all he did was lie about his kids being high school athletes.

Felicity Huffman had some dude take the SAT/ACT for her daughter, and only get 11 days in prison, and that's a far worse crime.

But this country values sports over academic achievement, and then cries and wonders why we're falling behind others in the technical fields.

The problem with these people cheating to get their kids into the schools though is that other kids would have rightfully been admitted on their actual merits but missed the opportunity because of other folks being corrupt

Yeah...that's what I'm saying.

Someone smart didn't get into said college and may end up on a different course in life just b/c some rich asshole's dumb dumb kid couldn't pass the entrance exam.
Way bigger issue than some marginally talented high school athlete missing out on a college opportunity.

Also, the whole scandal *should* be leading to a conversation about sports scholarships being too abundant and how much sports is valued over other areas. Considering these colleges that supposedly "needed" to save these spots for athletes to fill out their teams...apparently didn't suffer at all from not getting them since no one even noticed or cared they were short some recruits.

Confiscating it as evidence so neither side gets it would probably be the most ethical option, to be honest.

But then you'd open doors concerning whether or not the government has the right to co-opt it entirely (and if so, what they can use the money for), or if it essentially winds up having to sit in an evidence lockup forever or wind up being destroyed to take it out of circulation (which is what happens with a lot of physical evidence after cases are concluded).

Earning money through commission of a crime is the literal opposite of "legitimately".

MICHALECOLE posted...
Yeah thats not what jail should be for

Jail arguably has three purposes:

1) Punishment - inflicting unpleasantness on an offender partly because "they deserve it", and partly as a deterrent to other potential criminals

2) Detainment - keeping criminals off the streets to prevent them from committing more crimes

3) Rehabilitation - encouraging people to not commit future crimes by giving them alternatives to doing so

Realistically we should probably put the least amount of emphasis on the first one (since revenge/"justice" is kind of weak and deterrents rarely seem to work all that well in most cases) and the most emphasis on the last one (because turning a criminal into a law-abiding citizen means less criminals), but in practice we almost always do the reverse. We tend to be more vindictive than redemptive as a culture (which is also why ex-cons almost always have an extremely difficult time ever reintegrating back into society).
