Most bridges in America are in dire need of repairs or replacement. Including several that are crossed by thousands of people daily.

There was some article not long ago where most of America's bridges received failing grades.

The wealthy who own the current systems fight hard to keep other forms from coming into prominence. "Don't pay for bullet trains they're bad, instead pay and we'll expand my system that's already in place" but then as time passed it gets worse and kicking the bucket down the road so many times got us here. Where it should be possible to get a quick cross state rail line, at least, but nope that's not a thing.

theres certain standards and the money is in the cities and its surroundings. so some places remain while others are in constant improvement.

America's bridges are ticking time bombs. But the cost to fix or replace them is astronomical and would require a major spending iniative by the federal government, which isn't going to happen any time soon.

The F-22 is expensive. The U.S. Air Force had to stop production early on the F-22 because of soaring project costs. The cost of one aircraft alone is an estimated $334 million which includes research and development (unit cost of $150 million)

Might as well just wait till a few hundred people die in a collapse.

More money to funnel to their friends and base pandering nonsense like easily circumvented border walls and cash reparations.

Not saying all of america is like north western washington but holy fuck crossing the border from Osoyoos into the states you go from a beautiful thriving tourist town into such an ugly wasteland... the contrast is nuts.

And you gotta drive for hours before you get anywhere even halfway nice.

Nature is not ugly.

But I'm surprised there aren't more cities on America's northern border.

I love nature

nature here is gorgeous. You cross the border and its more like fallout in appearance than the forests and lakes and mountains we have here.

Once you get down around wenatchee its gorgeous but oroville and the like are just hideous all around.

Hell osoyoos lake somehow gets way less scenic and nice the moment you cross the line. Its honestly weird.

Because everything is so old and no one wants to pay for it to be fixed until there is a disaster that forces their hand like flint Michigan or a random bridge collapse. No politician wants to raise taxes to fix bridges people hate paying more in taxes it is much easier to pass some feel good legislation that gives everyone those warm fuzzy feels than it is to pass a bill to fix our aging infrastructure.
No one wants to put up the money to fix this stuff that is the problem.

the us has a pretty optimal size to population ratio for maintaining infrastructure based on my random second of thought on it.

Lot easier to ignore huge amounts of the country in a place like canada where theres so many barely inhabited areas up north. Or to fail to keep up in places with insane population density.

Our infrastructure was the best in the world until we gave wealthy people a 70% tax cut.

A really big bridge can cost like 1-2 billion. I wasnt commenting on tax breaks for the rich... just the idea that one dude could replace or repair every bridge in the country without losing a ton of his fortune.

Yes but those buildings were not built with modern construction materials and design practices.

Reinforced concrete, in general, is not a material that can last hundreds of years without regular maintenance due to chemical reactions which degrade it over time.
