Wouldn't be much of a Jedi, but in theory, yes, Alter Mind could be used to coerce someone into a relationship.

Do Jedi mindtricks last that long? I thought it basically just put someone into a temporary daze and made them agreeable to the Jedi's suggestion. I didn't think you could actually change someone's mind long-term like that, which would be needed to seduce someone.

Yeah, Alter Mind is suggestive, not commanding. Best you could do would be do your best to convince someone that's within their best interest to get involved.

Not to say it couldn't be done repeatedly over time.

I mean, what are toxic relationships but repeated suggestions that being together is better than the alternative?

Don't forget those words came from Anakin.

Canonically speaking, there's very little detail in regards to what Jedi are allowed and not allowed to do with regards to personal relationships. All we know for sure is that Anakin getting married to Padme wasn't allowed.

In Legends continuity, Ki-Adi-Mundi was allowed to have a wife and children, because his species had a very low birth rate.

No, but you could command Zaalbar to kill Mission. Thinking back on it, I can't imagine how powerful you'd have to be where that would seem like a good idea to Zaalbar.

*watches scene again* Never mind. Revan held the life debt over Zaalbar. That's all kinds of fucked up, but I guess that's precedence Big Z could be convinced to do it.

I'm guessing avoiding relationships is more about emotional attachments more than celibacy. Hence Anakin's mom.

Wonder if some of them partake in casual stuff/prostitutes.

In that particular context, wouldn't that be theft of property?

While Qui-Gon did swindle Watto, he sought both Anakin's and Shmi's consent to leave.

If you gonna have an argument about Star Wars lore with me, don't come unarmed.

I'm not saying Qui-Gon was entirely in the right, but it wasn't kidnapping.

Of course the serious issue behind Qui-Gon's actions was his odd clinging to the prophecy and believing he found the Chosen One, so clearly he was in an "ends justify the means" mood. Of course, there's an argument that he could have used the Force to deactivate the bombs in Anakin and Shmi's heads and spirited them away in the night.

Also known as the "You mean as a Jedi Obi-Wan and Quan Chi" argument.

oh ok, so freeing slaves isn't okay for the jedi, but stealing property that could be force sensitive is? what about killing someone who just purchased such property? that's a-ok in the jedi playbook as well. nah officer, I wasn't stealing credits, I was liberating them so they could be trained by a bunch of old men to utilize their latent abilities. this is honestly sounding less and less like a once-in-a-lifetime experience and more and more like child grooming

I'm not defending the Jedi style of collecting Force-sensitives, but nothing we've seen in canon implies that kids being taken by the Jedi are done without consent.

Also no one's "killing someone who just purchased the property". That didn't happen.

So please, what is the argument you're trying to make here? I've given you two perspectives on why what Qui-Gon did wasn't kidnapping, even if it was selfish.
