In the 4th episode there was a hijacked plane that was about to crash with all the passengers in it and Homelander is like welp nothing I can do, bye bye.

I'm confused, why couldn't he fly to the bottom of the plane and slow its descent down to the bottom? I mean... this situation, this is literally Superman's whole shtick! It was even in Superman Returns, him carrying a plane and rescuing the passengers, that's literally Superman's whole deal. I don't understand why Homelander couldn't have done the same?

Does he not talk about it in that episode? There's an episode where he explicitly talks about why that won't work but it might be later

also he's evil so there's that

Ok, so a couple of things:

  1. Homelander may not be strong enough to lift an airplane. Just because he's a "Superman" archetype, doesn't mean they have the exact same abilities (or on the same power level.)
  2. Superman can do that because he exists in a world where the laws of physics aren't always obeyed. Homelander exists in a world which uses real world physics more. So, assuming he was strong enough to hold up a plane, he would more than likely punch right through it.
  3. Superman can also do this because he has a bio-electric aura/field that was introduced in the late 80s. See, John Byrne realized what I said above. That Superman lifting something super-heavy should cause the structure to crumble. So he came up with the idea that Clark has a field that helps hold said objects together. This is also the basis for Superboy (Conner Kent version) having Tactile Telekinesis.

Homelander said something about him not being able to lift the plane because there's nothing to push off of. He also said he couldn't fully stop the plane cuz his strength would destroy it and taking everyone out of the plane would take too long.

homelander explains in the scene why he cant physically save the plane (The Boys universe kind of adheres more to real-world physics than traditional comic book stuff), but another very large factor to why he doesnt save them is that he simply doesnt give a shit about the people in the plane and isnt really willing to exert the great effort to try and save them.

you'll see later in the season, the plane crash is actually fairly convenient to the corporation getting military contracts & he knows it

the best part about the scene was him explaining why he can't help lmao

she asks him to do exactly that and he goes something along the lines of "how am I supposed to push it, it's fucking air, there's nothing to stand on" or something.

He really just didn't give a shit, the whole scene was about showing how arrogant and egotistical he is.

He is like a superhero growing up in the real world.
