My car has a key with two metal contacts, and sandwiched between them is a resistor. When you insert the key the computer reads the resistance and if it matches the expected value it allows the engine to start. Using a key with the wrong resistor or no resistor causes the computer to lock out the fuel injectors for five minutes.

Hell yeah. When I'm not using my 4th Lamborghini I get into my classic 2000 Nissan pathfinder and I shove that key inside, turn, hopefully it doesn't come out, then the weird little blue thing in the key lets the car turn on.
Beat that, fuckers.

Still have a good old fashioned key.
Was honestly a factor in choosing the car I did, I hate all this stupid tech they're putting into cars.

I fear I won't have the choice at all the next time I buy a new or newish car....

I'm enjoying it very much so far. The electric torque is fun and I have a very short commute so I'm charging it fully off of my 110V, probably not going to get a level 2 installed.

Display is cool, especially for me since I just came from the crappy Cadillac infotainment system.

I get the feeling that most of the people voting plain metal key with no electronics are simply unaware that their key is encoded with an electronic signature that is read by the car to verify that the correct key was inserted. Its kinda like a credit card magnetic strip, and unless your car is like 40 years old youve probably got one of those. You can tell really easily if your key doesnt really look like a house key and just is mostly straight and smooth with barely any notches at all.

My car is 16 years old now and its a regular key. Heh. I have a fob for unlocking the doors but it isnt an RF system or anything.

If it looks like any of these keys then its definitely not regular, at least not in the sense that its with no electronics. These kinds of keys are not particularly unique and have an electronic signature in addition to any nicks in them to make it far less likely that you can accidentally, or intentionally, start up someone elses car with your key. The protection in the fob for unlocking the doors isnt necessarily as secure but the combination of physical shape and digital signature at least make it very very unlikely that you can start up a second car with the same key.

Mine is like the lower right. I never thought of it or tried without the fob. Heh.

Honestly, the lower right one is the only one in that picture that Im not 100% sure about, as I just grabbed a random picture of car keys from the web, but Im fairly certain that if you opened up the plastic part at the top of the key youd find at least some rudimentary circuitry and maybe a battery underneath it.

If your car can be entered with a transponderless key, your car hasn't got basic security that's been mandatory from factory for over 25 years in the UK.

Mine doesnt open. Its a solid piece of plastic molded onto the key blank.

Its not supposed to be openable. What I meant was if you crack it open theres almost certainly circuitry inside it. Maybe you should x-ray it the next time you go to a courthouse or the airport and see...

Apparently you can wrap the head of your key tightly in tinfoil and if it has a transponder then the car will not start. That is one way you can verify it if youre unsure if you have one.
