I keep hearing that white characters who have always been white can be played by black actors because if youre white, your race isnt worth s*** especially if youre a fictional character.

But who does have to stay white?

Most of them before the 1960s, else their social interactions would be different.

it would be kind of strange if you made an American revolution movie and cast George Washington with Will Smith, Benjamin Franklin with Jackie Chan and King George the 3rd with Salma Hayek

or something like that

This. White is seen as "normal", with anything else being a deviation.

Batman. or at least Bruce Wayne. other people have been Batman for a short time. but Bruce Wayne can't really be anything but white. why? well the Waynes are an Old Blood family in Gotham. there is no way like in the 1800's, that they could have risen to power if they weren't white. It just wouldn't be believable if you know anything about American history

I think there's a few characters where there's a solid argument that they'd need to remain white.

Steve Rogers, basically being the Aryan ideal, but being firmly against Nazi ideology.

Magneto, due to the unlikeliness of minority Jewish people existing in 1930s/40s Germany.

But people complaining about Human Torch being black is fucking dumb.

it's not that alone that was upsetting. it's that Sue wasn't also black. and they hand waved it away by saying "oh she was adopted" but they are blood siblings in the comics. if Sue had also been black and his blood sister, it would have been better

but they wanted a pretty blonde actress

The adoption angle doesn't really change much about Sue and Johnny's relationship though. Especially if Sue was adopted at an early enough age that she has no connection to her biological family.

The Fantastic four as a whole are basically a non-biological family anyway.

The thing with Magneto is that origin story is getting a bit long in the tooth if they want X-Men to be set in current day.

Frank Castle isn't a Vietnam Vet anymore so origin stories like that can change.

yes
https://superman.fandom.com/wiki/Calvin_Ellis

in a different universe, instead of the son of Jor El becoming superman, it's a black Kryptonian. who in his human identity on earth, has even been elected to president of the United States

basically he's Obama

What makes an adopted family so vastly different from a biologically related one aside from the DNA? Like how does it impact their story?

I agree Steve Rogers remaining Caucasian, blonde, and blue-eyed is important to his background as a Nazi-puncher. The juxtaposition is something that is intrinsic to his presentation.
