If they won't play then nothing else matters, because once they stop playing they stop getting any orher part of the experience. That's what fun is. It's not necessarily a matter of constant joy. People generally aren't happy when they play horror games, or utsuge, just to give some examples of not just games but entire genres that don't revolve around puppies and rainbows and bubblegum.
