So, I switched from Ad Block Plus to UBlock Origin about a week ago b/c a site I visit semi often made a downgrade and now I need a custom UBlock filter to use it properly.
And just today (not an issue yesterday), I got ads on youtube videos! I guess they found a way around UBlock Origin? Anyone else have this happen?
Now...the interesting thing is...I switched back to Ad Block Plus and have not gotten any youtube ads since.
Maybe ABP is considered so low-use now that it flies under google's radar?

Somewhat unrelated, but how do ad blockers work for phones? Do I need to get an app or does it have to be a plugin specific for the browser? And can an app block ads on a dedicated app like YT's? Because YT's ads on my phone are starting to annoy me, even though they're reasonably short

That's weird. I've been using ublock origin for almost 2 years now, and I haven't seen a single ad since I installed it.

Idk. I just usually skip the youtube ads after 5 seconds... if I even get them. I just don't sometimes...

Another minor change that's annoying he crap out of me: Before I could put the mouse somewhere on the duration bar and have pop up text saying what time that point is. Now I don't get that, and have to actually grab the circle and drag it around to see what time I'm going to (below, where the current time of the video normally is).
It's minor, but damn annoying.

Yeah, I could skip after a while, but...I don't want them at all, and until today, I had never seen one since I started using ad blocking add-ons.

My guess would be a blocklist issue, you could check which ABP is using by default and try them in uB.

There are browsers available that support plugins, but for mobile devices I prefer a dedicated program like Blokada since so many apps are littered with them. I don't use the official YT app, so can't say with absolute certainty, but it works with all the other apps I've used.

If you have it, can you turn it on and off?

If you're asking about Blokada, yes it can be turned off. I'd take a screenshot, but I'm using an older version and it looks a bit different now. You can see what it looks like on their homepage, though. https://blokada.org/

Huh, topic got bumped

I haven't had the issue since then, so...I guess it's fixed? Not sure why it happened.

Also, the hover over text showing the video time stamp re-appeared around a day ago, so I guess that was an error on youtube's part they fixed, and not an "upgrade" via feature loss, like the usual...

on phone?

just get brave browser.

for youtube, get youtube vanced.

https://www.xda-developers.com/youtube-vanced-apk/

if you want to block ads in other apps, and don't have a rooted phone, then get blockada. https://blokada.org/index.html

it wont do youtube, though, you'd need vanced.

it's worth noting that youtube vanced also gives you background playback, and screen off playback. which, on the official app, you'd need to subscribe to youtube red for. and since it's just a modded version of the official app, you don't have to learn a new layout.
