Despite my dislike for fantasy/medieval stuff and having not played the previous games, I've hear nothing but great things about it for the longest. That and I have an RPG itch I want to scratch. I also figured that since Cyberpunk is, by far, my most anticipated game at the moment, this game might give me an idea on how CDPR like to do certain things like writing and mission structure.

It's a fantastic game. I particularly liked the parts where you have to investigate the scenes of monster attacks and gather clues to figure out what it is and how to beat it. It was like playing medieval fantasy detective. Plus the lore surrounding the monsters is very interesting at times

The only thing and I swear it actually is THE ONLY THING I have a problem with in Witcher 3 are the movement controls. They're so sensitive at times.

Aside from that, game is perfect. You made a wise choice.

So is it like the opposite of recent Rockstar games with the crummy "realistic" controls that respond whenever they basically feel like it?

I think the controls are just fine. Be aware there is an option in the menu for alternate control movement, toggle that and see which one feels better.

It's not really like Rockstar. In the menu there's an option for Alternative controls that might feel more normal if you dislike the default.

Play on the hardest difficulty - the combat can be annoying at first but the challenge will be appreciated, otherwise the game is too easy imo.

Also loot every container/chest/barrel/w/e you come across because certain item recipe locations are randomized.

Not really. It works well enough for what it is but it's no Sekiro.

Is there a problem with the Switch release?

It's the worst version and it cost the most is all. Functionality it's fine. Not worth an extra 40 bucks just to have it portable and look like garbage though.

I've been hearing very mixed things about the combat. Some people say it's fine. Some say it's flawed but serviceable. Some say it's just downright boring.
From what I can tell, it seems like the game's biggest weakness.

Again it's not bad but there are so many rpg's out here with better combat that this just doesn't stand its own anymore.

I guess I'll have to be the judge of that myself. I'm perfectly fine with a simple combat system as long as it's fun and serviceable, and everything else around it works great.

The combat is fine -- it's not super unresponsive, laggy, etc. I think people just get sick of swordfighting after the umpteenth battle, since Geralt does physical attacks and a few magic signs (well, and bombs) and nothing else. This ain't DMC or anything, haha. People acting like it's the worst combat system in the world just don't know what the hell they're talking about, though. Go see what Witcher 2's combat was if you're curious about the generational improvements.

The combat is the best in the series. The original Witcher was more like a traditional CRPG with a timed clicking mechanic to string attacks through standardized combos. You had to consume potions and wax your blades before entering combat. And the skill system sucked - there were three core enemy types (small single enemies, large single enemies and small mob-group enemies) and you just hit a button to switch between your combat posture depending on what you were fighting. The problem there is that each combat style had its own "skill tree" that required points to improve... but you were wont to encounter all the enemies, so it was kind of dumb.

Witcher 2 was a clear stepping stone towards 3 - you have more responsive combat and can throw bombs, but you still had to consume potions and wax your blades before combat (IIRC) and it was really clunky.

Yeah, Witcher 3 isn't a Souls-like game as far as the technical aspects of combat go, but it still presents a challenge on Death March difficulty. Plus they streamlined potions and waxes so you can use them in battle which is nice AND crafting potions and bombs is automatic once you learn the recipe, and I found myself using signs way more frequently than in the other two games.

Ultimately it reminded me of a mature Legend of Zelda game, just without individual dungeons with individual mechanics and bosses.

Well the combat seem perfectly fine to me. The way some people were making it out, I was almost kind of thinking of some MMORPG tier combat. Also, the alternative movement controls are WAY the fuck better.
