I still think rear projection like in Aliens or Terminator look better than the green screen nonsense today.

pre-cgi often looked worse, but somehow it made it better.

The exorcist looks legit creepy, the skeletons that inspired Spinal (forgot the movie's name) and the black and white king kong looked all wrong but it somehow made the movie better.

The never ending story 1 & 2 special effects looked creepy as fuck but also gave the movie so much mystique. A new NVE with CGI would suck

John Carpenter's The Thing, but that's too obvious a choice. So I'll also go with Hellraiser 1 and 2. Especially 1, and especially that scene from the first movie. I know people that have seen it know what I'm talking about.

Forbidden Planet is legendary for its special effects during the "creature attack" scene. Rather than CGI, they hired Disney animators and did some wild techniques to make it look good. I found this short post about it while I was searching:

I think the ST lightsaber effects are fantastic, but I dislike the PT version of lightsaber fighting. I'm not trying to fight you for your opinion, but might I ask what your problem is with the ST lightsaber effects?

They look fake. I know, laser swords. But in the prequels, the blades didn't look like they were there, the colours appeared washed out, not what you would expect from a beam of light. But in Return, the blades looked like they had real colour to them.

I agree for the prequels, but for the Sequel trilogy they actually had pretty substantial physical props (with corresponding lights) to represent them, and just added effects over them. If anything, they look the most real of all of them.

I only watched 7 and 8 once, I'll have to go back and re-evaluate them now.

People think JP is all CGI. It's not, many of the T-rex effects were actually a gigantic Rex animatronic

I wonder what the cost is/was to build the T-Rex anim, compared to doing the same scenes entirely in CG.
