Social media platforms don't do enough to combat bullying, and even things like Reddit revising their harassment policy is pretty much just fluff to make it appear that they are doing something (they aren't).

On the other hand, they antagonize someone until they commit suicide and people all pretend they "didn't see the signs" and "wish they could prevent such a tragedy" without doing anything.

Same thing we see in American politics whenever mass shootings happen. All words, no changes, and the cycle endlessly repeats.

I'm 28 years old and I got harassed on FB by some loser and his fuckboi friends because I said animal abuse vids aren't funny. Had to just make my profile private because people I didn't know had shit to start. You should have seen my messages on the messenger app. People never grow out of it, they just stay immature and toxic.

One thing about cyberbullying is that often it's an extension of "real life" bullying. "Just get off the internet" isn't very helpful advice when the victim is going to see their cyberbullies at school the next day.

The video was a guy chucking an apple at a cow and hitting it on the head. The cow was fine, but I was just like, this isn't funny, hurting animals isn't funny, and people in the post started making fun of how I looked, crept on my profile and harrassed me on each post I ever made, called me names (f***** was particularly popular) in messaging, etc. The problem doesn't begin and end with kids, and people who think it's as simple as not being online are obviously a little ignorant. On platforms like Facebook, you can literally harrass someone nonstop with zero consequences, because it's just too big and active to effectively moderate.

Incidentally, the animal abuse shit has been my biggest problem with the place since day 1. Way too easy to force each other to see dudes burning cats and blowing up frogs with fireworks, and people just laugh react without a second thought.

Because when people get moderated for being shitheads, they rally their friends up and start a "movement" over "censorship". You can't crush cyberbullies like you used to because they make alts, spam and attack websites over being punished, and slant the narrative so far their way that even people who hate them feel the need to chime in about how they're being "censored" and how that's not okay.

Society will improve as we gradually choose to walk away from online social media.

It wont solve the problem completely, but the very idea that dont go on social media is even somewhat analogous to dont go outside shows how dangerously far down the rabbit hole we are. The internet is a tool, not your life.

But yes, more needs to be done about the issue, since thats not happening soon.

Sounds more like you're the bully, not the one who got bullied. Or maybe the one led to the other. People today, especially more and more kids, live online. That's a problem in itself, sure, but that doesn't mean YOU are the one should stop enjoying something and stay away from it just because people can't stop being pieces of shit.
